Cam Sleuthing
Let's suppose I have a car and want to figure out what cam (or cam characteristics) is in the engine, which is known to have been modified. I cannot pull the motor or remove the cam/chain covers.
Any way I can get this info?? I suppose I could measure lift with a dial indicator at 1 intake and 1 exhaust valve as I turn the engine over by hand... and then plot it out.... it's OK to remove the valve covers and do PPI type stuff... Any other ideas?

Randy:
All you can do is guess unless you degree the cam and measure the duration, overlap, and lift,.... ![]()

Taking it for a drive and accelerate it from almost idle to red-line. You should be able to feel/hear the peak torque RPM point. If the peak torque RPM is above 4K, you certainly don't have T cams. It's not exact, but it will give you an idea of the cam spec.

Randy,
As Steve said, plotting the whole lift/timing curve will give you the definitive info ... A quick check would be to check the TDC overlap value on both sides and see where the values fall compared to the standard spec book values for the popular cams. Solex, E, and S cams should be far enough apart to differentiate!

Good idea. I was hoping for a more magical answer but should help a fair amount..
