We just picked up a Garmin C330 and could not be more impressed. Great mount, lightweight, 2gb internal maps, great UI, compact - would easily buy another.

My only GPS is an aviation unit, but I'm a big fan of Garmin products.

I've been wanting a GPS just to tell basic speed/trip distance. How accurate is the "current speed" on inexpensive units?

Garmin is the best. Period.

I use an iQue 3600 and absolutely cannot live without it. It is a PDA too, and an MP3, etc... If you are looking strictly for in-car use, get one of the auto-related Garmin units (more user friendly for a driving environment).

Speed is 100% accurate (and identical) on the least expensive all the way to the high end models.

The high end models give you more features (routing, for one) and better screens.

Review of the Mitac 168: http://www.pdatoday.com/maximumpda_more/1544_0_2_0_M/

I have the Bluelogger unit i'm reviewing now that will store you route while you drive and alow you to download it to your PC when you return from a trip.

That's good to know.

I was thinking that the Garmin Vista C, Ledgend C, or the 60CS looked good. ($50 rebate now too.) Anyone using these models?

It looks like they try and get you on the acessories - dashboard mount, 12v adaptor, and better maps. Are the base maps that come with the units any good or will better maps be a must-have item?

Garmin Quest. Not real expensive, but works really well. The girlfriend loves it. Santa brought it for her, as she is directionally challenged. And, she can move it from her van to the 968 , very portable.

Which unit? Depends on what you are using it for.

I use mine to actively find addresses while on the run... and it tells me how to get there - realtime. If I detour, my iQue (and most other high-end units) will re-route in realtime. I upload my maps to an internal IGB SD card (that I can swap). Databases are updated every year or so with new roads and places.

I use a Garmin IQUE. Not only does it get you to your destination, but you can find places like restaurants and shopping centers, stores, places of interest once you get there.

And my wife can always find her way bacfk home.

I found this site that seems to have some good reviews and info.

http://gpsinformation.net/

The reviews at least made it clear to me what features do what on the various units and how they are enhanced with better maps and more memory.

At this point I'm torn between getting a basic $200 unit or getting a more full featured unit for around $400.
