My A/C blower quit today after making a rubbing noise for several days. I thought the motor was shot but when I removed it, it tested ok. Evidently a piece of the broken plastic froze the fan in place. Several pieces fell out when I removed it. I'm sure the busted plastic is what let the fan shift out of alignment.
Here are my questions. The motor is fully set in place but the bottom crushes the evaporator. Seems like it's been like this for some time. Is this normal or is the evap set too high? How do I lower it? Should I look at replacing the evaporator that's just crushed in the center or should it be ok as is? I'm concerned the crushed fins could cause a loss in an already inefficient system. The plastic housing that the motor sits in is cracked. It is a separate piece from the cover and is sealed in place and held there by a bolt or two. Can I just buy the plastic motor support without purchasing the entire motor assembly? I'll try glueing it if I have to but I'd rather buy a new piece since this plastic is 26 years old and must be brittle by now. Here are some photos of the setup. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Pretty sure our host has the plastic part you need:
OEM-91157332300 $49.62......At that price, perhaps you should just try to epoxy it. Maybe it is just my old eyes, but from your picture, that does not really look like the right motor. Perhaps it has been replaced. Is there a part number on it?

Thanks Fintstone for the info. I had not considered the possibility of the wrong motor. I'm only the second owner of the car and have had it since 1984 and don't recall replacing it. However, I keep all my maintenance records on computer and will check tomorrow. I tend to think the motor is correct since the four metal clips that hold it in place fit perfectly, however, I'll look for a part number once I remove it from the frame.
I'll try the epoxy first as you suggest then if that doesn't work, I'll bite the bullet and order the part. Gorilla glue might work; the stuff is pretty strong. I'm thinking I might as well have the motor partially rebuilt while I have it out. I'll play it by ear for the moment. I'll also see if I can straighten out some of the evap fins. This shot shows the clips and the fact that the frame has split all the way through. ![]() |

![]() 91162489900 It looks right, but somehow seems to stick out too far. I cannot tell from the pix, perhaps you can.

interesting..your evaporator looks nothing like the one in my '74..in fact, mine looks a whole lot newer? i'm not able to see fins as mine is in a black plastic housing. it has a brand name label in view that i'll have to go check out tomorrow. good luck with the repair.

I just pulled the evaporator out of my car, and you could have it for the cost of shipping. Let me look at it when I get home. I think I broke one of the clips for the fan housing when I removed it.
If you want it, its yours.
