P-Car Garage Renovations need input

Hi guys,

I am in the process of renovating the P-Car Garage and I need some input.

First off, the floor is going to be the traditional white/black with a black border at the entrance to the garage (picture attached)

The walls are going to be red/white. The "red" color shown is the base coat. The actual color will be Lattice Red (picture attached).

I want to place a border between the white/red line and would like some suggestions on what would look good there. I was thinking about a B/W checkered border, or something similar.

Also, as you can see in the picture there is a water heater in the corner. I want to paint the bottom half red and the top half white to match the wall. My wife says I should box it in and be done with it.

I have decided not clutter the garage with shelving so I am going to clear out everything. I am going to place a work bench at the back wall which will be to the left of the door behind the P-flag.

I would also like some suggestions on what to place over the bench. Two suggestions were the P-Logo or a front pic of the P-car with light bezles which would actually work.

Any input would be appreciated along with any info on where I could find borders to dress up the P-car garage.

I say separate the red and white walls with a yellow line to balance out the flag, even trimmed top and bottom with black would be nicer.

Think about what you'll be doing on the workbench. If you'll be using cleaners, sprays, paint, etc, you might want to reconsider what you're putting behind it.

I say box in the water heater to give your garage a more clean and finished look. I think it might look a little unfinished if you just paint over it. I think the black/white tiles are a great idea. Using a workbench with a couple Coscto Stainless Steel garage cabinets on top would look great. Space out the Cabinets and put the porsche flag between the two. My 2.

You have that in quotes. Do you have any idea who said it and what it means?

You want something to put in the back behind your work bench. How about that saying so you can look at it for awhile.

Now, don't think that I'm climbing up your ass, I'm just having some fun late at night.

Before you box in the water cooler, check w/ your local bldg dept re clearances reqd or use of non combustible materials. You also should provide access to the controls and service. If it is 15 yr old, think about replacing it. Do you need to provide air to it? You also want to keep anything that may explode away from it.

You could probably find a checker pattern @ an auto parts store on a self adhes vinyl tape for your border.

Yeah - what Paul said. I know several people that work in the Regional Burn Center here. Water heaters cause a LOT of fires every year from fumes getting in the pilot light..

Appreciate the input guys. As for the water heater, as long as combustable materials are 6" away from it, it's ok to enclose.

I have done some research on the internet for border material and found black/white checkered border 5" high. I think that may be a little bit too high. I am still looking.

I will probably build the work bench and look into the cabinets at Cosco. Once the garage is painted, I don't want to clutter it with cabinets like I had originally planed.

With regard to the yellow, I am also going to look at that along with black border top and bottom. The Yellow would contrast with the white/red.

Tomorrow I am going to put the first coat of red on the wall and I will post the pic to give you guys a better idea of how the red/white looks.

I built a work bench out of 4"x3" steel. It spans more than 10' across the back of my garage. Across the top, I used 1" square tubing as "studs" and covered the entire top with thick galvanized sheet metal, sheared to the right dimensions. From there, I welded feet and bolted it down and a fixture to hold a massive vice. I built it at working height for me (almost chest level). My back never hurts. The steel bench is so nice because it is beefy and doesn't require support in the middle of the span (unlike wood). AND the dimensions of the bench are much smaller than equivalent in wood. I did weld it together, but even a begginning welder could do that, no problem. I had intended to cover some of it plywood, thinking I may want to hammer against wood and be able to replace the top every so often, but rarely have had that need. I also installed a drop down ceiling ladder in my garage, which is awesome. I put plywood sheets on top of the celing joists and have TONS of storage up above. Now I take plastic, covered bins up and down every so often, but this is a very clean solution.

one more thing, because of the smaller dimensions of the steel frame and high working height, I can my roll-away tool box completely underneath, which is where it stays. I also have a table saw, jointer, mig welder, etc, etc underneath. I think my bench is 15' across, about 30" deep and 45" high.

I can't really give much garage advice, because mine is all go no show. But I did date a hottie that was studying interior design once.

Here is what a guy locally did to his Garage, he used some of the same colors you have in mind, as well as the checker tiles. I hope this gives you some ideas. Good luck.

Better check local codes and re-read the installation requirements for the heater. It looks like a conventional, gas fired, atmospheric vent heater -- while it probably can be enclosed (maintaining required clearances) they all require some means of supplying combustion air (i.e. louvered door or pass-through vent in the "closet" wall); and you should place the "closet" door facing the control side of the heater as all mechanical codes (that I'm familiar with) require access for repair and/or removal and replacement of mechanical equipment.

I don't get this decorating the garage thing. The most that should be done is you slap up some posters on the walls apply a few stickers and you're done. To me the garage is my workshop not a display room. I would be more concerned about the bench and vise location then what is on display over the bench and what border to put up.

With regard to the codes for the WH - on new installations, outside air is required. On existing systems, as long as there is a louver in the door, it can get combustion air through the garage door.

Georgia codes are not as strict as some would like to think. We finished a 400 + water heater replacement installation job this past year and all of the replacement water heaters were in a closet in the apartment. No outside ventilation other then the cracks in the doors and windows.

When this water heater craps out I am going to install the instantaneous type which mounts on the wall. They sell for about $400.00 and are made of copper.
