need ideas...sell the SC buy early car?
First of all, I blame Craig for this. I've been nearly sleepless for the past 2 days. I keep thinking of how much i would LOVE an early car that was tricked out. I really love the look of the R-Gruppe cars. currently I have my '95 993 project car/daily driver. and i refuse to even consider selling it.
however, i also have my 1978 SC. it's a great car and i know it well...... however, should i consider selling it and buying an early car? i know NOTHING really about the early 911s. is it possible to backdate my SC? any ideas anyone? Craig, this is all YOUR fault!!!! ![]() Cheers, happy Friday everyone. Kyle. |

Your SC shell is virtually identical to an early shell, except that your is galvanized. A purist is going to want an early VIN plate. If you don't care about VIN plates, then an SC actually makes more sense. Of course, you'll go broke buying the parts but hey, that's how we show our love.

The SC is easily backdated and has been done by a number of board members. The cost isn't that bad when compared to selling your car, then buying another. You need bumpers, front fenders, hood and paint.

But really, Kyle, do you want a driver, or is the whole poser thing really that big of deal? My POV; back-dating is a lot of work; and what you end up with is a car that you'll be afraid to take anywhere but our of the garage, and back again. Trying to park anywhere else, w/o traffic cones around those fragile fiberglass bumpers, means no latte for you. (or was it Redbull?) SC's are like a favorite pair of blue-jeans. Tough, no muss . .. But OTOH; I suppose, those designer fasions can really help make that package appear cooler than it is. ..stuck a feather in his cap and called it macaroni . ..

Chuck, you are making this sound soooo easy. now if i could just find a BIG bag of money!!!
Island, redbull please, at least while driving anyway. I would spill coffee all over myself in the car. I really don't worry too much about my car getting a little wear & tear. I've done a lot to my 993 including paint from EuroTech, yet i drive the car nearly everyday. oddly enough i never considered it a "poser thing". Its not like i'm putting an M3 emblem on my 318ti. wait....maybe i should try that first! anyone have a GT3 emblem? |

same boat. but i think i am gonna keep my SC, enlarge my house/garage. buy an early car, and take several years making it friggen nice. the guys i admire the most on this bbs are the guys that do full rebuilds on their own. cant remember who, but the person with the orange RSR build is a badass. i dont know if i can do it, with my budget and skills. but i only know one way to find out. i think if i stretch out the time, my budget will fit. i gotta start this before i ever get married though.

Just backdate it and paint it flat black, or better yet, black primer. You will never worry about the paint and the car will have a mean road warrior look to it.

The way things are right now you couldn't buy much more than a beater 110hp 911T with the proceeds from selling a nice SC.

You can backdate, but it won't give you chrome window trim. Unless you're one of the lucky guys to have an SC w/ the chrome trim. This is an essential part of the early car look. Also, early shells are lighter.

I blacked out my trim with Wurthe, but its fairly shiny underneath and the trim paint could easily be removed.

Step away from the box. Build something that no one (or not many, anyway) has, yet. My fantasy car is a mid-year to Carrera with a type of 964 bumper that would look like 964 on top and RS on the bottom. I'm not at all pleased by the look of the IROC types that keep the squareness of the platipus duckbill mid-year bumper. The 964 gives a roundness to the nose that is very appealing.
964 bumpers will fit, but the lower section needs some help. That and some RUF wheels and assorted RS and IROC touches here and there (like a whale tail) would produce a very formidable hot rod.
