Hot start problem on a 3.2?
On cool days my car seems to start just fine. And even on most hot days too, except recently, on my drive to the gym in the morning around 10am it's about 75 outside, I park my car at the gym after a 30 minute drive to it, the asphalt is hot and reflecting heat to the engine. I go work out for about an hour, then when I get back in the car (very hot inside and engine still hot) it wont start. So far it has happened 3 days in a row under the exact same conditions and scenario. What gives?

Starter solenoid. My SC has had a hot start issue twice. 6 years ago a new starter cured the problem. My last 2 track days I had no starter after a couple of sessions. This morning I had JW install a new one. All I have to do now is get it hot to see if its cured. H'mmm I need another track day.

Does your starter turn and the engine just won't start, Or is the starter not spinning at all?
If thew starter is spinning and the engine won't start I would look at the Cylinder Head Temperature sensor. |
The starter doesnt move

BRJ,
Same situation. I can hear the fuel pump and nothing from the starter. Once cooled down it starts fine. My new starter was about $180. Its a easy change out especially with a lift. Dave |
Oh Hey,
I spent alot of time in HB as a youth. Back when the Golden Bear existed and Bolsa Chica was called Tin Can Beach. I always admired the surf bums that lived in campers parked along PCH. Good luck, Dave |
BRJ, it might be as simple as a bad tranny ground strap but i doubt it.
The hardest part of changing the tranny is getting to the top nut. On an SC it almost requires a partial engine drop but i've done it without. Bottom line is the car is trying to tell you something: stop going to the gym! ;) |
BRJ,
If its something that you need help with let me know as I don't want you to miss the run the next weekend. I am sure we can get a couple of the SOCG guys who know more about this stuff to help you out. |
On a 3.2 you should NOT hear the fuel pump unless the motor is running or at leat spinning...ther is an interlock permissive ( of sorts) that doesn't allow the fuel pump to run under these conditions.....

I stand by my statement...unlike ( maybe) the CIS cars..the DME cars will not allow the fuel pump to run ( say, with simply the ignition "on".)... unless the engine is found to be spinning first...check the functioning of this system. Also do a search on this topic in other posts that indicate the same thing.
You're hearing something else...its not the pump running.... - Wil |

FINALLY!
The Problem was - Wouldnt start after hot short runs. Suggestions made for repair Check Solenoid Check ground strap Check battery Check PIMP stereo amplifier wiring Check alarm system ignition cut off So I started with the easiest Gorund strap - check! Battery - 20 days old, check! PIMP stereo amplifier, check! Alarm system, I did a bypass of the ignition cut off relay and now it starts every single time, turns out the relay was so far away (about a 1 1/2 yards) from the ignition switch that with the heat and all the current was not enough to deactivate the little relay. So guys, if you are having this problem, I suggest check the alram sytem first, 2nd - make sure the relay wires are not too far away from the ignition switch due to the loss of current. |
