3.6 engine swap - finally a plan

Fellow 3.6 nuts; finally, its time to get done with the job:

The plan is to do it over Memorial Day weekend. I will get back from a Japan trip on Saturday around noontime. If the jetlag is not too bad I plan to pull the old engine on Saturday afternoon and drop the new engine in on Sunday. If everything goes all right I should have the beast running by Sunday night.

The 3.6 engine is fully prepped (exhaust, clutch, airfilter, sheetmetal, new plugs, etc), the new wiring harness/DME for the 3.6 is already installed and the tranny is notched. So it should be feasable.

Why the hurry some might wonder Well, I am moving to a new place by the end of May where the garage does not have this nice fatt beam to do the lifting.

If anyone wants to stop by (Santa Barbara, CA) just drop me a PM and I will give you directions. Sorry for not giving more advanced notice but getting stuck in Europe for 6 weeks and having to rush over to Japan doesn't leave much wiggle room.

Ingo

Ingo,

If you have time, set up a camera. Watching a high-speed 48 hour power swap would be a blast!

Wish I was closer to Santa Barbara. I'd love to help.

What are you doing to cool the oil?

If Iwould have had the time I would have played with setting up my webcam. I'm sure there's a way. I am using cable modem. My router always has the same IP. But this time I just have to remind myself to take tons of digital pictures.

Check out my web site for updates. It shows the nose oil cooler.

I am doing the same swap in a few weeks and was wondering where you bought your new 225mm flywheel?
I have not pulled my 3.2 motor due to the fact I think it will sell easier in the car for a future buyer, but will make the conversion in 2 weeks regardless. Any other tips?

It's a 89 964 Carrera 4 flywheel with new threads to allow to accomodate a 915 pressure plate. You can buy new conversion flywheels from Patrick Motorsport. That is what most folks here on the board ended up doing.

Good luck,
Ingo

they and Kennedy make conversion flywheels; the center of a new one is welded to the outer periphery of an old one. not alwyas in balance - search on my name for a pic of a hefty wt. needed on mine

A quick question about the wiring harness for this conversion, I am doing the same swap ( 3.2-3.6 ) and I have the harness for the 3.6 motor along with the computer, my question is I was told by Patrick motor sports I would need a piggy back harness ( $289.00 ) to complete the wiring swap. And at the same time Todd at LA Dismantler said it is very easy to wire the 3.6 harness to the car by cutting a few wires and soildering the back. Any feedback would be great.

Mark,

I had to reply since you're in Huntsville, AL. So am I. I have done this conversion, a lot of it is posted on my website.

http://members.rennlist.com/jimwms

Yes, you can make do without the harness from Patfick, however, you will have to cut into the existing wiring harness you got with the engine (you did get the harnesses, right?) and do a lot of cutting and splicing. Then when you need to remove something, maybe for a repair, or to do troubleshooting, you may have to cut into the wiring. You can also build your own harness, you don't have to buy one from Patrick. All you need to do is to track down the connectors, a lot cheaper than $289. I could help you out with the wiring diagrams. So can others who will probably read this.

Drop me an email... jwms911@comcast.net

I can give you my phone number.

BTW, I got some wiring help a few years back from the very starter of this thread --Ingo. I don't know if he remembers this.... Hi Ingo.

Hi Ingo,

Yep those are the diagrams, and the Excel-based pin-outs. I have them stored on my hard drive. So after all these years, you are about ready to do the actual transplant, eh? Hope everything goes as planned! Wish I could be there to help out.

Mark,

This is the kind of info you need. But my offer to help is still open if you need it.

The transplant has been done more than 2 years ago Jim. Somehow this thread re-surfaced.....

Cheers,
Ingo

Hi again Ingo,

(Jim, quite embarrassed, slapping his forehead with the palm of his hand and thinking "wake up, Jim, and look at the date of the first post!")

I guess your talking about the upcoming Memorial Day week end caught me off guard. Just coincidental enough to make me think I knew what I was reading for once.

So how are you liking the "new" engine?
