Nightmare Day.
Well - an update to working on my car with the broken window rail and latch that kept sticking.
I eventually fixed the door latch - the problem was a little lip towards the upper part of the latch that needed bending out a little, so that it mated with the part of the mechanism that operates that helical spring. Did that, degreased and cleaned and all OK. However that was after a day of stuffing around and ending up with a bent window rail after following procedures on some previous threads posted by other ppl who have done this type of work. Here was my nightmare; 1) tried tor remove latch mechanism. Unbolted door edge side window rail, raised up, accessed latch - tried undoing the bolts but the philips head 3 screws have a retaining nut, one of which was a nightmare to remove. Only managed to get two out of three undone, the third was sooo tight my socket set bent the retaining nut. FAILURE to remove machanism 2) Following the procedure others have done has now left me with a bent window rail. So now, after re-assembling the window track after raising it up, the window binds. 3) this nightmare started because the window pane came away from the rail and fell inside the door. This required unbolting the whole rail and removing it from the car solely to get the pane out. 4) However, prior to this, I have to question the practice of unbolting only the rear half of the window rail. To do this, requires removing 3, 5mm allen bolts, 2 up and the top and one below. But by only unbolting these, and "forcing" the window track up, this practice actually BENDS the rail from its original shape. WHAT ABOUT THE TWO PHILIPS SCREWS ABOVE THE 1/4 SECTION OF WINDOW - ARE YOU SUPPOSED TO REMOVE THESE FIRST - NO INSTRUCTIONS MENTIONED THIS. SO, with the pane removed i could concentrate on the latch mechanism at least, which I resolved. But after re-assembing the window track, and 'bending' it back into position, the window binds to ***** and wont raise smoothly in the rail. I put this down to a kink in the top edge of the rail where raising only one outer edge bent the rail at the place where those two philips screws are. If anyone has some knowledge that has been omitted from the instructions I followed I would appreciate some advice. At this stage my rail is bent slightly leaving my window in a far worse state than before. Cheers RG5 |
