1982 911 sc - torque for cv joint bolts

I have 2 books saying the 6 #10 allen head bolts should be torqued to 60 ft./lbs. that seems like an awful lot for such a small bolt

Your CV bolts should be M8 -- six of them, per, and the O.D. across the shank & threads should be a nominal 8 mm. You are correct in questioning the torque value of 60 lb-ft, as that is for M10 [10 mm nominal shank diameter] ...

The standard value used on M8 DIN property class 12.9 CV-bolts is 29 - 31 lb-ft. Here is a chart worth printing and keeping handy for quick reference ... anytime a question pops to mind when those hairs on the back of your neck stand up:
