I have my motor and trans out now so saving the expense of redoing this a year from now is what I'm after. So I thought the trans I had was a 8:31, but now find out that the trans was changed to a 7:31 R&P
The motor was recently dynoed after a rebuild at 229 RWHP and it builds all the power from 4-65K While at the track recently I found that 4th and 5th were to short...getting to the redline real quick. Possible 3rd also. Tans was leaking so out it came... I'm getting suggestion from my mechanic that I should go with a 8:31 & taller gears or go full swig to a G50. I already have invested the $500 Wevo shifter and now the gate package from Wevo $895. I really prefer to keep all these parts and find a good solution for the 915. I like the trans and was also looking to save some $ without building a whole new trans. Will the 7:31 hold up with higher gears in 3,4 and 5th? Will that even work? I also don't want to lose the spedo if I have to get into the 8:31 in my 72 with mech. spedo I read allot of the posts here and the 7:31 and 8:31 have some equal bragging rights. Thanks in advance for any suggestions |

I'm no racer, but the 8:31 sounds good. Slightly taller gearing all around, and if you're racing your car I imagine you might not miss 1st and 2nd being as low as they are with the 7:31. G-50 requires a hell of a lot more modification, and many people like a properly set-up 915.
The 74 911's have a taller 5th (tallest ever in a 915 IIRC), in conjunction with the 7:31 and I've never heard of any problems with them, so if you were to change the gears but leave the R&P that would probably be fine too. |
