Under-Dash Speaker Mount Opinions Needed
The site sells a plastic tray that mounts under the dash, allowing for a set of component speakers. I'm thinking of installing one in a '70E (using my own speakers) to spare the doors from the sabre saw...
Anybody have one? Thoughts? BA

I don't like them - the speaker really should be held rigidly so it (its frame) won't move, only the cone itself.
And that is not a great location to have the sound come from. The 911 is an intrinsicly poor design for good audio (except the good audio from the engine). The door is your best bet, really. What year car do you have that does not have holes in the door frame??

I don't remember the brand unfortunately, but the slickest setup I've seen was at CES in a GT3.
Under the knee pads on each side it had a horn mounted, probalby 1"x8" or so if I remember right. The sound was awesome.

I don't think the underdash mounts will sound that good. A speaker needs to be enclosed in a box to sound proper. A door works as a box, under the dash doesn't look like it would.
I put a bazooka bass tube in the trunk,6.5" separates in the doors and 4" mids in the rear in the area right next to the seatbelt reel. I have a 1975. The bass tube is powered, and ported into the cab by drilling about six or seven 3" holes above the feet into the trunk. It works really well considering the design of the cab on a porsche isn't really set up for speaker placement. Last edited by dipso; 05-22-2005 at 04:39 PM.. |

Thanks all.
I'm just kicking around ideas for discretely installing a sound system using an iPod as the source and leaving the original Blaupunkt reciever & dash speaker in place. There will be an amp, and probably a sub as well. Probably should've explained that before... The other contender would be to install RS door panels with components mounted in them, but I am afraid I might miss the arm rest on those long drives to California! Randy: I'm sure the holes are back there, I'm just exploring other mounting options. The one option that will NOT happen is to cut up my original door panels, no interest in that. BA

I tried it. It didn't fit well and sounded poor. As noted, the under-dash panel wasn't held in place firmly enough and the speaker hit in the rear. If you decide that you want to try it, I will sell you mine.
