Cool Collar Install

How do install this thing with all the A/C hoses in the way?

Previous threads suggested removing the bolts from the compressor and moving it out the of the way or to cut the cool collar in half.

Anyone had any luck with either of these approches?

Could I also ask my wrench the next time I do an oil change to slip it on before oil filter install? Would I have to shorten the collar first?

Thanks for the help.

Kato.

remove the oil filter and install cool collar....put oil filter back with the collar already mounted. The AC hoses should be able to be pushed to the side enough for this. If not....pull the entire AC assembly and shave a few pounds. =o)

My compliments to you gentlemen. A Cool Collar thread without a single nasty, I-heard-they-suck, knee-jerk, moronic Cool Collar put-down. The CC in my 911 is the same one that was in my airplane. All three of us--me, airplane and Porschie--have survived.

I am still waiting for some of those comments.

If I can cut down 10-20F that's good.

If it does nothin' and I get the "what the hell is that thing question" it's worth putting it on. And having some beers discussing why or why it doesn't work afterwards...

When cut in half I'm assuming it's so you get two half-cylinders? (not two smaller cool collars)

If this is what you did was one clamp sufficient to ensure full surface area contact?

For all of you guys who have fin tube baseboard heat in your house...it is a 3/4" copper pipe with a cool collar on it. Any questions on their effectiveness?

Kato-push the A/C over to the left a bit, and you should be ok. This is what I have to do when I run out of mann filters and have to use the local store bought models, which are a bit longer.

Is there any published data regarding the heat transfer effectiveness of a cool collar, besides unfounded clains by manufacturers and out opinions on whetehr they work? I personally have never seen any.

I can't tell from the pics what brand of AC compressor you have but on my 83SC with a Sanden I rotated the compressor so the hoses were on top rather than towards the oil filter it freed up a lot of space to make oil filter removal much easier.

It seems there is just driver observation regarding it's effectiveness.

It must do something, maybe 0.1F - 20F if you read the
claims of others.

Bottom line it's a heat sink and will remove some amount of thermal energy from the oil. It's just too bad it can't be made thicker with fins about 6" long.

Of course if I decided to change out my oil lines with those finned ones I'd be set. That's a heck of alot of surface area for a heat sink!

Let it rain ....
