I need encouragement

Well, I just got my 86k mile '85 targa back from my painter. I rescued this one from a local Seattle guy who wasn't aware targas need to be parked in a garage.

Anyway, I completely dissasembled the thing so my painter could do the job right. Glass out, trim off, the whole caboodle. I have a new OEM dash, mint RS America seats, a freshly recovered targa top, new euro H4's, all sorts of new rubber pieces, etc., etc. for this little guy to be whole again.

My bodyman/painter had the car about 2 months and in that time my new business (a one-man retail motorcycle/scooter shop) has started to take off and it seems like what little time I had when I ripped this thing apart (I mean, carefully, painstakingly disassembled) has gone out the window.

Should I just start putting it back together do I let a guy I know who works for one of the local P-car shops do it for me at his house? Should I just grab a tailight and start installing the stupid thing or do I just wave my red cape and say "'ole!".

done venting now

kie

I would just start with anything that's easy, like the headlights. Then as time permits, start on some of the more involved things. Sometimes it's hard to stay motivated when we have such little time.

A guy once asked me as I was assembling a 10 mil dollar machine with bundles of wires and terminations "Man that will take forever, where do you start, just looks like spagetti to me" I told him "One wire at a time" Just get started , it will come togeather.

Depends on what you want, to HAVE the car finished fast or to have the car that YOU finished over time. Personaly, I'd opt for you to finish the car but if you don't have the time then you don't have the time. I only work on my car a few hours a week but it's not important for me to have the car done anytime soon. As Nike says "Just Do It".

Thanks. The paint code sticker says "L999" and I've heard it referred to as Iris Blue, Medium Blue and lastly as Mica Blue. Whatever it is, it is Glasurit paint in the original color.

No encouragement unless you start posting pics vertically. Going horizontal sucks

Maybe hire the glass done. the average guy who comes to your shop won't know how to do the rear, so ask around before you commit.

I am a business owner and I can tell you you have to have recreation or you will burn out. If putting the car together is not fun for you, don't do it. You will just burn out faster. Only one life to live.

Re: I need encouragement

I am in a similar situation, after I painted my 912 (hey it looks like a 911

I did a few assembly items here and there, but the project was dragging. The solution? Invite a few P car friends over to give you a hand. We made great progress in one day, and it gave me the motivation to keep at it for the next few weeks.

Go to th NW Pelican site, introduce yourself, and invite the local gang over for beer and pizza some Saturday - and shazam! It will get done - or well along the way.

As with most things in life, the hardest part is getting started.

I'll second Milt's comments. You need to step back from the business sometimes to prevent burnout. If you don't have some time to assemble the car, you need to make some time. It's easy to get burried in your business, but if you don't keep a balance both you and the business suffer longer term. Been there, done that.

From the pictures, you can knock that out in a 1-2 weekends easy. Consider it quality time to clear your head.

Thanks everyone for the pep talk. I just started putting things on like this lower rocker/trim thingie. One problem is my shop is right in the heart of Capitol Hill (Seattle) and there is a club or bar just a 10 second walk away in nearly every direction with all sorts of distractions.

yeh - terrible problem - ought to be a law...

another idea is to put on stuff that makes it driveable. then by winter, business might cool off a bit + you won't drive it or not as much - so you'll have time for the non-critical trim items. of course, lack of sunlight may make you have extreme lassitude and just want to hibernate... but you already know that espresso shots will substitute for sunlight.

Where is your shop? I work in the 2 Union building downtown. Maybe I can stop buy, and give you some words of encouragement as I drool all over your Ducatis. Oh why oh why didn't I pick that 900ss when I had the chance?

Thumbs up

Kie,

If you put the camera down and stop clicking the refresh button on your computer you might actually get Humpty Dumpty put back together again.

Kidding.

See you tomorrow.

I'm just up the hill from you. 1527 Harvard which is 1 block west of Broadway between Pike and Pine (closer to Pine). Always some Ducatis to look at and a 42" plasma with either Speedvision or MotoGP/other bike DVD's playing.

900SS's are pretty sweet. There is always another.

Progress...

playing.

If you need help, Denny Aker's shop is at Broadway and Harvard. I know a couple of guys (Jim Shuh or Kerstan Rillos) that can have your car reassembled correctly in a couple of days, but it'll cost some $$$. The windshield glass you really should have someone do it for you or at least help you. I took my car apart to have painted but didn't want to screw up the paint job by putting it back together, I didn't have the time anyways. So I paid $$$.
