Other people driving your car.

Ouch.

Why is it so difficult when other people to get behind your wheel and drive? Why do valet people 99% of the time not know how to start a Porsche?
Why is it that when I "give in" to a girl on a date does she miss third and hit first?

I don't want to be so snobby, but I'm tired of people driving my car. I don't have a rare model or a year that sounds impressive ie: '65-'73 or a '87-'05 for that matter, my daily driver is an '80. But, I just can't do it anymore.

The only other person to drive my 911 is my mechanic.....no one else. They can get their own

I'll be honest, I like letting other people dive my car. Now, they have to be really good friends or family to even qualify, but I enjoy it. Most people never get to drive a phenominal car like a 911 and giving them a quick shot behind the wheel may be an experience they really enjoy and remember. My brother was blown away when I let him drive my car and has a much better appreication for what the car is all about after his drive.

I would cringe at the thought of a valet even touching it though. If someone isn't family or inner-circle, I totally agree with you.

I'm the kind of guy who parks the car in spots with the least chance of getting door-dings.... it's not an exotic model either, but I even do that with my Audi. So, no chance in hell anybody gets to drive it with me concious with the sole exception of my dad.

He knows how to drive, I know he's good for any damage (since he is also all risk insured on the car) and he test drove it when I bought it.

My mom, well, when I was bleeding the brakes I asked her to asist... the result: no brake fluid running out of the calipers as she was stomping the gas pedal... What can I say but "no way she's driving the car".

My sister?: she thought the clutch was stuck (I don't have the helper spring on the clutch) - not that I was letting her drive it; the car was just sitting in the garage.

I have rarely seen anyone not used to driving these cars drive them well first time . Off course other owners and mechanics are good at it . I let a good old friend drive my Targa last summer . About 5 minutes into his drive after several stalls and muccho lurching and bucking , I itold him " you need to pull over now" . Fortunately we have a strong relationship and he now has his own 77 to mis drive.
I parked cars when I was in college for a hotel . I had several escursions with 12 cylinder Jags , P Cars , Javelins and other muscle cars but the Porsches were always my favorites and I treated them fine . NO valet for my sports cars!

I would not let a valet touch my car (none here anyway).

Maybe if a female was really really cute...

As for dates, the proper answer is 'sure, honey' but it isn't like most cars. I'll have to help guide you thru it until you're used to it. Wait for her to say yes, and then push the seat back and tell her to sit on your lap while you guide her hand on the shifter.

I've only let my best friend drive it briefly but he was a little too fast with the shifter and I had to keep telling him to slow down the shifts.

In general though, the way things are with liability, insurance, and lawsuits, I don't let anyone drive my car. It's just not worth the trouble if something happens. Someone on this board lost a friend and his Carrera not too long ago after the friend drove the Carrera into a ditch and refused to pay for damages. He might pipe up and tell the story again.

My girlfriend of 4 years hasn't driven any of my cars except my old truck. Frankly, she's a terrible driver and will never drive a Porsche unless she buys her own.

Wife and Mechanic, those are the only two other than me that can drive my car..... Period !!!!!!

Mechanic because he is a very talented factory trained tech and he respects my car.

Wife because she is a fantastic driver and she supports my habit without even flinching.

I usually do not let anyone else drive any of my cars. My father and my best friend are the only ones who have driven my Tiburon, and I am the only one who has driven my Porsche since I got it.

I don't really trust my best friend to take her out, because he doesn't know the intricacies and personality of the ol' P-car, and probably wouldn't pay attention if I tried to tell him what they are.

I wish it were easier for people to drive these cars because they are not properly experienced from the passenger seat. You have to actually drive the car to "get it." But no, I don't let other folks drive the car because instead of them gaining a positive impression, what they really get is embarrasment.

I let my girlfriend drive it...she lets me drive hers. She doesn't like to drive it because my 915 is such a junkpile. I keep it away from the valets, however. I have offered to let other people drive it, but they mostly say "no, thanks". People that ask to drive it, I tell them to forget it.

Hey, I didnt drive it so well either for the first week or two.

Pat

My wife and I got into some, ahem, heated discussions about her driving my car. I just wasn't comfortable with it and always put her off when she asked. I finally had to let her drive it to work because her car was in the shop while I had a plane to catch. It was raining that day of course (rain means more opportunities for stupid drivers to NOT watch where they're going) but she drove to work fine and when I got back in town I went to her office and picked up the p-car and let her drive my company van home.

My wife and my close friends. Especially my wife. She supports my caraholicism, (as my next jewell is being shipped right now) so what's ours is ours. If she wants to drive it to work, drive it. But the weekends are mine!!

A few yrs back my brother-in-law wanted to drive my car cuz he thought they were the ultimate classy car. Of course I went with him in the passenger seat and all I can say is that he drove it like some old lady( sorry, no disrespect here). The car was lurching and in general not having a good time.

A lightbulb went off in my brain.....since there is no tranmission tunnel or anything to obstruct my foot from slamming his gas foot down to the floor , well, you get the picture. We took off like a good pocket rocket and instantly the car was happy.

I told him that these cars are ment to be driven not babied. When we got back to the house he thanked me for the experience and told me he would never own one because they were way too fast. I thanked the porsche gods for a job well done.

I let my teenage son drive it. I'm nervous about others mainly due to the tempermental 915.
My daughter wants to drive it, but I think I'll wait until she gets her license, and I rebuild the transmission.
