i had gearbox work done on my 86 911..3.2 ..about 6 months ago....but lately a have been feeling alot of vibration though the gear lever when in 3rd gear only 3rd..but only at aroun 3000 rpm...this vibration turns into a rubbing {loud} sound if rev are taken higher but as soon as i change gear 4 or 2 the noise and vibration gose away....could this be worn engine bushes ..changed bushes in front and back gear shift ...this is now driving me made .......could the selector fork be bent when the box was taken out.....any idea....help.....or could this be a balance problem with the engine but only comung out in the more powerful drive gear....

Check the CV joint bolts are tight where they bolt to the tranny.

I had a similar problem with a vibration that turned out to be the CV joint itself was worn - but the bolts do come loose if not torqued properly.

The vibration was there but only on hard acceleration in 3rd, sometimes fourth.
I first noticed it when booting it down a slip road to join the motorway. No rubbing noise though. Just the vibration. I could feel it through my arse more than anything else. My inner cv's were shot at 104k and thats about the right mileage for them to start failing.
Loose bolts are common, especially after a remove and refit ( ie g/box removed) and will give a noise like you describe. Best to check them. You don't want a driveshaft to come off and start flailing around in there...

cant believe fixed it

well i fixed it ...it was the front gear shift bush ...strange that so much vibration is coming through gear shift? but when the new bush was fitted it seems to of gone away...?i think i might check compressions just to see if engine running rough..because this vbration must still be there just not being felt by me though gear stick?
