Help with 911 shift linkage
Having trouble getting the adjustment right after new clutch install. I am following the manual, but I have experienced different problems, like popping out of 5th or 3rd, to now after further adjustment, sometimes in 5th 'locking', and I need to wiggle the shifter up to get it out of 5th. Also some 'whining' from the transmission it sounds like, when under load ( may be a different issue entirely). Is it just trial and error or are there some 'special techniques' that can help me get this right. How important is fore and aft, or just the side to sidee plane adjustment? seeing as I have never been inside a gearbox, it is hard to picture some of the mechanics. Help.

important
think angles & mark a line on the coupler for reference.

I just got done adjusting mine last night. It will take serveral tries to get it just right, at least from my experience. I used serveral bungie cords to hold the shifter in the exact location I wanted it, then tightened down the coupler.
However if you have a buddy to help you hold the shifter while you position the coupler it would be much easier.

Fore and aft is important. Get an assistant to help. Select third and ask assistant to slacken clamp. As he does this gently push up on the gear lever until you feel it move. Only move it a very small amount and ask him to tighten clamp whilst you hold lever still.

If you pull back the shifter boot you will see a spring loaded reverse lockout tab ont he upper right corner. WHen in 5th, if the selector lever does not go past (and allow the tab to return to the resting position) it will get "stuck " in 5th.
