Carpet Kits ?? What's the difference?
I have been looking for a replacement carpet kit for my targa. Can you guys post pictures for me to help me decide what I want? Also does anyone know the difference between these besides price:
Interior Carpet Kit, Domestic Cut-Pile, 911 (1984-89) [Photo] Interior Carpet Kit, German Silver Knit, 911 (1984-89) [Photo] If I am going to buy a carpet kit , I want to make the right decision the first time and not have any problems down the road. Any and all help is appreciated.

The fine "grain" of a carpet will be hard to determine with a pic. Some of the companies that sell carpet besides Pelican will send you actual samples to choose from, color wise and style wise. Included in this list are Autos International in San Diego County(they offer samples to the best of my knowledge) and World Upholstery up in Santa Paula.
Pelican sells only a partial list of what's out there, but can get more styles. There is also a company up in the San Fernando Vally called GAHH, or something similar to that. Porsches had two levels of carpet on many models and I don't believe either one was the same as "domestic pile." |

I just got samples of Sliverknit and Domestic pile carpet from World Upholstery and Autos International (via Pelican).
Although the Pelican site says" The domestic material is very close to the original used in the 911, and the difference will only be noticeable to the utmost concours purist." I can tell you there is a huge difference and is very noticeable. In the samples from World Upholstery, the Domestic was much nicer but still not as nice as the Sliverknit. The World Upholstery set is also cheaper. The Sliverknit from both companies seemed very comparable.

I would also be mindfull that 84 had two styles, on with pockets by the driver and passenger feet and the other with a form fitted corner. Order 85 if form fitted, and 84 for pocket.

The silverknit is definitely nicer and I think worth the price.

So Sliverknit sounds like the way to go. Do you guys have any pictures of what this looks like installed? I will definitely request samples from a couple of sources. I want the interior to look good and it has to be able to handle the weather being that I have a targa. Keep the information coming please.

Ryan,
I have saved several pictures from searching different threads but I am looking for new ones and any tips and or advice. I am perfectionist so I want to have tons of options and pictures to guide me through this DIY project. Chris

I took my existing carpet to a local upholstery, he made me an exact duplicate for $250. I installed easily. Try it and see.

we'll just call them gahgah for now. Paid nearly $600.00 and frankly it was too much. It should have had a few pieces with leather trim, they sent vinyl. Some pieces that should have had vinyl trim had nothing. I've seen $300.00 sets that looked just as good if not better. My advise, keep reading the forums and ask. |

I went with the set from Appbiz and I'm very happy with it. That said, my brother-in-law installed the German Sliverknit in his 82 SC and the difference is noticeable, but only if you're looking for it. In general, a new carpet kit installed correctly will look and function great, but the authentic German stuff will be more...well, authentic.

I also went with an Appbiz plush set, Although I haven't installed it yet, it appears very nice.

I got the best Autos International had to offer, and it was junk. Fortunately, it spends most of its time either in the cellar when the car is stripped out for track events or buried under high-quality Lloyd mats front and rear the rest of the time. Otherwise, I wouldn't have chosen to upholster an ashtray with it.

You must get german silver knit. It's very light and that's what you need. The domestic pile really is a pile: of *****. I've had it. Took it out a few months later for sliver knit. Now I want my interior back to champaign because black it too hot.
