rebuilding a 915 tranny

I suffer from the dreaded 'while you are in there' syndrome.....

I am adding the WEVO gate shifter to my 915. So, while I am in there..... I thought I should fix a shifting problem.

The tranny has 71,000 miles on it, shifts fine except getting into 1st. The typical problem, hard to get into 1st if the car is rolling. Not a big objection, but one I would like to fix 'while I am in there'. What parts (bands, syncros, sliders, stops?) should I have on hand to change out. And again, I am thinking only of 1st (and 2nd if it's related), 3rd, 4th, and 5th shifting are just fine.

Also, am I nuts to mess with the 1st shifting? Should I just do the WEVO (I already have it)?

Thanks for any input.

John H

Garage
You are a better man than I if you take on this project. Chain tensioner upgrade was as involved as I want to get in my garage.

I remember a year or two ago someone posted a hilarious story about the mishaps of a 915 tranny rebuild. It's probably out there somewhere. Good luck.

What are the symptoms of it not going into first?

Hard to get in gear? This would tell me that the slider/dog teeth are worn/mushroomed and do not want to engage each other. This could also be described as a balk towards going into gear.

Grinds before it gets into gear? This would tell me that the syncros are worn and the above is not far from happening.

When I rebuilt my 901 a few weeks ago I found all three major parts (sliders/dog teeth/syncros) were worn. I did not need to replace any brake bands or stops.

My baulky 1st shift was corrected by just a Wevo coupler replacement and many hours of fine tuning with the adjustment.

Try this before you do anything else?
