If it's not one thing...

Yep, you guessed it... it's another.

Finally getting almost everything sorted out on the car. Now something new pops up.

Went to work this AM all was fine. On the way home, the speedo stopped. Odometer still worked fine, just the speedo stopped. I did a search of threads, but they all seem to either have stopped along with the odometer, or they have stopped at the bottom.

Mine has stopped and pegged at 40 Km/h.

It stopped while driving, I tapped the front of it, and it jumped, up a little, then down a little, then froze at 40 again. No amount of tapping has any effect now.

I've checked the cable at the wheel, but will check it again closer when I throw it on the hoist.

Any other solutions?

Jim

Bizarre. No warning. It's worked perfect for 36 years...

You'd think it would give me a sign.

So I went to the garage and tapped the housing again. It dropped to the bottom. So now it's sitting where it always does when off. I guess we'll see what happens tomorrow.

Could it be that the dial is just dirty from time and is getting hung up on dust and dirt? I know that's how I fixed my clock...

sounds more like a worn, rusty, dirty, no longer lubed cable to me... maybe the tension relaxed after it sat a while?

you'll find out soon enough I guess.

The odometer works consistently. Trip meter runs tenths the whole time. Wouldn't this shut down also if the cable from the wheel were bad?

Anyhow, while I'm driving, if I tap on the guage face, the needle will go to my current speed. But stick there. Tap it again, it'll go to the proper speed again and stick. Weird.

yes - if that was posted before I missed it.

gotta be n the speedo...
