off center steering rack - weird issue after installation??

I reinstalled my steering rack after installation of turbo tie rods. Took the rack out to clean and install the tie-rods. I measured from the center of the box to the outside of the arms and set the distance equally. From there, I installed the steering wheel dead center. Next I installed the tie-rod ends, counting turns so both were equal. The wheels are towed very close to zero and are very even on both sides. I will have a shop set the final alignment.

Here's the odd part: The wheel turns 1 1/4 turns clockwise and 7/8 turn counter clockwise.

Thoughts? Should I be concerned? Only way to compensate would be to adjust the tie-rod ends differently or space the tie rob spacers at the rack. Both seem counterintuitive.

What did I miss?

Thank you,

Doug

I would say, yes, you should be concerned. That is not right. You should be getting 3.1 turns lock to lock, for starters. You're telling us you are getting 2 1/8 turns lock to lock. Might you be hitting something with the rack, preventing you from getting full movement?

friendly bump for other opinions...

All I can say is it was late. Egg on my face. My wheel was bumping up against the arm on the lift. With no assistant to see what was stopping the travel, I goofed. I found the problem in 15 seconds with a clear head this morning. Your reply did get me to do a quick review.

Thanks for your considerate reply and bump!

At least you have a lift to blame. I wish I were that fortunte. Someday.

Glad you found the problem, but what's more, glad you were looking and analyzing.

Zeke,
Thanks for the kind words! A lift is not too far out of reach. If you come down to San Diego, I'm 2 minutes off of the 5. Feel free to ping me and I'll show it to you. I paid $1500 shipped, brand new from bendpak. There are numerous threads on this. Used could be considerably less, in my opinion. That was some of the best money I've spent.

I had a question for you: where did you have your ZINC / CAD plating done?
Thanks,

Doug
