Starter's just clicking.....
 

Ok, here's one I need some advice on...

Occasionally my car just clicks when you hit the starter... However it will sometimes click but if i hold it for a sec or two, it will start going... but it's totally intermittent...

I've replaced the ground straps and installed a remote solenoid..

Ignition switch is fine

This sound like a dying starter?

Is this when the car is hot? Some starters will get "heat soak" and will not turn over untill they cool slightly...

Does it hot and cold...

More so cold, actually....

How's the connection on the lead green wire?

I had similar problems on my SC and I too thought it was my starter. Sure enough it turned out to be a crappy connection.

Perhaps I should just re-wire the whole thing?

Im sure 20+ years of undercar grime has done it's toll on the orginal wires..

I imagine that it's got a considerable amount of oxidation on the leads...

Try cleaning your battery posts.

Clean the battery posts, check and clean the connections at the solenoid. Put a little vaseline on them afterward to keep them clean. Worst case scenario, starter going kaput....

Slacken the 13mm nut holding the main starter feed wire. Wiggle the wire and then tighten nut. This should keep it at bay for another couple of months. Well it did on mine.....

I'd be inclined to simply replace that section of wire at that point.

Just trying to remember how resistance applies to different gauges of wire...

If i remeber correctly, when you cut a wire, you you increase the resistance by half if you splice it, right?

I want to decrease resistance to allow more current flow..

Could just be the solenoid.

It corrodes at the end where it needs to make a good connection to the threaded part of the starter, where it terminates. Just take it off, clean with emery paper and refit. Disconnect battery first!

My car exhibited fairly close to the same thing for years. Turned the switch once - click, turned the switch a second time and it started perfectly. I just reinstalled the starter after having the solenoid replaced and it seems to be working fine now.

I had a similar problem recently. turned out to be the "yellow wire" connection on the 14-pin connector at the engine compartment fuse box. It's the post furthest away from you when you open the deck lid. Clean all connections. This one, battery posts, battery ground strap chassis connection, tranny-to-chassis ground strap, all connections at the starter, etc. You have to do this in order to have any idea whether your starter or solenoid are okay.

Had the same problem... turned out to be the solenoid.

How old is your battery? If its old and tired that could be it also. Mine did the same thing. I left the lights on and the battery died, when I jump started it, it ran fine until I wanted to start it again. All it did was click. Try jumping it to see if it will start. A new battery did it for me. Or hey, you could just push start it :)

Be careful what you wish for. We had the jumpstart and the push start already on one of the runs. If the SOCG had some of the original guys, their would be 4 red targas on the run.
