915 Tranny help Please

I just went through my 915 tranny. I replaced sliders synchros & 1st gear (shaft & gear) Now, when you let off the gas in first gear,it makes a hell of a racket. Kinda sounds like rrrrrrrrrrrrrr
I took the tranny back apart & every thing looks ok. The spacing seems to be in spec. I checked the CV joints, & they seem ok. If you put the transmission in neutral the sound goes away. Has anyone ever had a problem similar to this? any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Craig

the 5th/reverse shift sleeve rubbing tooth to tooth against the reverse idler is common, if not enough clearance was adjusted in, but that would happen in any gear except reverse, and in neutral too. how were the bearing retainers that hold the bearings against the diff housing? they wear so that the bearings and shafts get end play, which will cause some noise.

Thanks John, When I open the tranny, I will re-check the bearing retainers. The only time it makes the noise is when you are coasting in first gear. The tranny shifts & pulls great. I've had this engine & tranny out so many times I'm thinking of installing quick disconnects, & lynch pins. Thanks again, Craig

Problem solved, one tooth on the used 1st gear shaft that I bought from German Auto Parts out of Atlanta, has a very slight ding in it. When the gear is rotated backward it makes the sound. I guess buying a used 1st gear isn't allways a good deal after all. Craig
