3.6 conversion coil wires

Hi, I have a '76 911 I've back dated to '73 rs. Took many years to gather all the bits and pieces but I'm getting close to finishing! Also fitting '91 3.6 and 86 915 transmission. I have Steve's kit which has been great. I've done nearly everything I need to do prior to fitting the motor. It's currently sitting under the car waiting to be jacked into place. I'm looking for some info on the coil wires. On my harness there is a branch off that goes to the coils. There are 2 brown wires that go to earth. 2 black wires that go to the+ on the coils. A light green and a light green/red that go to the - on coils. Then I have this extra ,slightly heavier black wire that comes out with the black/light green wires. I have no idea what this wires for and am worried I'm missing something.
Steve has been great with his help but wondering if he is perhaps away as I have not had a reply to my Email for a few days and he is normally very prompt. Thanks Mike:)

I think his e-mails have been going into cyber space. I phoned him and he said that he had in fact e-mailed a response, which I never received.
Give him a phone call.
I will e-mail him tomorrow to test his sending capabilities.
My 3.6 is a '97 and has the coils mounted and wired with no color combinations, sorry I can't help you there.

Thanks for the reply Drums. I think I have it right but am reluctant to connect a battery without knowing. Your car sounds exciting! Is Steve doing the work for you? Have you decided what to do for the exhaust? I don't have that sorted yet. What I would like is a stock shape with inlets for my B&B headers. This looks very tricky looking at where the headers finish but we'll see. I'll try Steve again.
Thanks Mike

With the '97 motor, the brain has to be sent to Germany for reprograming [for performance, while they are in there, too]. Steve took care of that along with the wiring harness.
The exhaust is going to stay '97 stock ['97 heat exchangers and cat] until the exit of the cat. At that point, we will re-direct the exits out of the cats and put on resonator tips [Steve carries them]. This is the least expensive route for the exhaust. If it's too loud, I will change it later as I accumulate more expendable income.
I am only about a week away from a finished car! A complete suspension rebuild/upgrade with Elephant Racing and Rennline stuff and the 3.6 v-ram. I traded my old 3.2 for the labor on the suspension, so that part won't hurt too much.
After 7 weeks [so far], I am itching to have a run in her.

Sounds great! I did my suspension with all the Elephant racing goodies before I did the engine and body. Huge improvement! My car has been off the road for 8 months now so 7 weeks isn't so bad.

What did you do to your suspension? How extensive was your suspension rebuild? Why has the car been down for so long? Is it because you are doing the work yourself?

Yes did most of the work myself. My car is a '76 2.7. started with the suspension. 21/29mm torsion bars. New bilstien sports shocks. Elephant racing polybronze bushings. Bigger sway bars. Sealed Mono balls on rear trailing arms. Turbo tie rod ends. new ball joints. Lots of painting and nickel plating. Was a different car to drive. Didn't have it on the road long before I started the body and engine. I think it's a lot easier to get in and get all the suspession done in one go. Saves a lot of work.

Sounds like yours is set up alot like mine: 22/29, Bilstein Sports-rear, Bilstein H.D.-front, poly/bronze f+r, Elephant adjustable sway bars, f+r, Rennline sealed mono balls-f+r w/triangulated strut brace, turbo tie rods, new ball joints and no painting or nickel plating. I also am putting in a new master cylinder, stainless brake lines, new pads, engine sound pad and low friction a-arm mounts.
It should be like driving a new car. Tons of torque and power with a sportier suspension.
Do you have pictures of the finished underside? It sounds great.

Don't have pictures of suspension but will get some this week. Do have some pictures of the car waiting for it's engine but they won't come up. Don't think my dial up service can cope! I can get to a computer on broadband tonight and will try again. You have goodies on your list I would like!

Are those 16" X 9" on the with 16" X 7" up front? I've put 16" X 7" up front but couldn't bring myself to pay the enormous amount of dollars for the 16" X 9". The early '89 came with 16" X 8" so they will have to do for now.
I will let you know how the car feels when it is finished. The shop is concentrating full time on it now and it should be done towards the end of next week.
What color are you going to go with?

Yes they're 7's and 9's by 16. Got them 2 years ago. Prices weren't so high then! Staying with orange. I'll keep you informed of progress. When your car is back on the road would love to here your impressions! With all your suspension up grades and the engine you have created a new car!

drums 06-01-2005 02:29 PM

It may only be a week or two. I will start a new thread on the conversion to 3.6 and the suspension.
Stay tuned!
