which car? Thats interesting. Normally the facs will give a ambient temp range according to your driving conditions and let you decide. They are saying just go with 0W40? Interesting...

I have heard that the extended 15-50 is NOT being discontinued. If you enter your 911 in the Mobil website it will recommend the truck formula Mobil 1, 5-40.

I might be decades behind the times, but does Lubrizol still make the additives for Mobil 1? If so, who else are they making additives for? Follow the baseline supplier.

My understanding from the TDI community is that the Truck/SUV formula with the yellow cap is Mobil Delvac 1, a full synthetic widely used by truck fleets. I was using Rotella T 5-40 full synthetic in the 911 and the jetta with no issues year round, cold, summer heat, DE. Now that my rebuild is complete and I've gone through three Castrol oil changes, I may switch back to synth, either Shell Rotella-T 5-40 or Mobil T/SUV.

I was told the same thing. Given that EM just switched the Mobil 1 formulation this year to the new Extended Performance line, along with the new labels/packaging, it would seem that they would have dropped 15W50 before making the switch and incurring those costs if EM indeed had that intent.

I just bought 3 cases of the new gold cap 15W50 a few weeks ago.

maybe my oil rep doesn't know diddly. he said there would be nothing to replace the old 15-50. sounds like the extended life will replace it. if it wasn't for this board i wouldn't get 1/2 the info out there.

John,
This is a direct quote from the Mobil site:

Mobil 1 Extended Performance 15W-50 meets the following industry approvals:

* ACEA A3, B3/B4
* API SL
* It also meets the requirements for diesel powered vehicles where an API CF or CD oil is recommended.

All Mobil 1 Extended Performance viscosity grades have been tested to be fully compatible with engine seals and conventional oils. They do not require a special oil filter.

Mobil 1 Extended Performance motor oil is designed for today's longer service intervals. Mobil 1 Extended Performance products contain 50 percent more SuperSyn, 37 percent more cleaning agents, and 36 percent more anti-wear additives than Mobil 1. Mobil 1 Extended Performance with the Advanced SuperSyn System helps keep engines running like new and helps extend engine life by reducing wear and oil breakdown. Please follow the recommendations in your owner's manual while your car is under warranty.

For more information, see the Mobil 1 Extended Performance Product Data Sheet.
END OF QUOTE

Clearly, this is NOT the same oil as was sold with the red cap. I guess the additional additives in the package would be a net positive for our older air cooled engines, but I am not that knowledgeable in this area.
Can someone comment on the changes to the package from red to gold cap???

That’s my recollection, too. There was an in-depth oil article in Excellence within the last year or so. They listed all the Porsche factory recommended oils, and 15W-50 was not on the list. 0W-40 is good for all cars in all temperatures.

I also recall them saying that the 15W-50 is too thick during startup, especially for the newer cars with hydraulic lifters (993’s on). The lifters do not get enough oil quick enough at startup, so they recommend a thinner oil for startup. M1 0W-40 is one of them, also Castrol 5W-50.

But from what I understand, a lot of people with earlier cars, without hydraulic lifters, are sticking with 15W-50. Some experts still say use 15W-50 on later cars, but ONLY if you are doing a lot of track driving in hot weather. Otherwise stick with 0W-40.

You can go to the PCA tech site and enter “recommended oil” in the search box to see what the factory says.

I'm using the "Extended Performance" Mobil 1 in my '69E and it leaks much less now then it did previously. Everything else seems the same, temps and pressures are normal, but I kind of doubt that it's possible to tell the difference between the different grades of oil from the drivers seat. I suspect that you'd only know if it was a bad choice after a year or two and an engine tear-down.

I use Super GooBoo Goober Gomp in the EX2000 formulation with low hydroxyoil deposits.

Nah, I stocked up on the 20/50 -

Found this on the site....hope the additional CLEANING agents don't mean cleaner and more leaky seals...I switched to red cap mobil 1 15-50 from Castrol 20-50 this last year, no new leaking and lower temperatures....hope this keeps up with the new Gold Cap stuff!

"What is the difference between Mobil 1® Extended Performance and the currently available Mobil 1?

Mobil 1 Extended Performance formulas are designed specifically for today's longer service intervals and are guaranteed to protect for up to 15,000 miles or one year.

Mobil 1 Extended Performance has a unique formulation with boosted level of protection and performance. These formulations with the Advanced SuperSyn System contain 50 percent more SuperSyn, 36 percent more anti-wear additives, and 37 percent more cleaning agents than the current Mobil 1."

Gawd, this thread had me in a minor panic for a spell...so when I use up my stockpile of red cap Mobil 1 15-50, I just switch over to the extended performance gold cap 15-50?

Yep, but you'll pay $1 or $2 more for essentially the same stuff.

If you are using dino and want some inexpensive but decent oil, get the 5 qt jugs of 20/50 "Supertech" at Wally World, less than $5 a jug. I have it on good authority that it is repackaged Valvoline. They don't have synthetic in the proper weight.
