So here we have pictures from Friday-Saturday work
Front panel :from my investigation --I have taken front bumper out first time, so good no sign of any damages (collision), even no rust (only surface rust but it is no problem) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1118053358.jpg left fender out http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1118053597.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1118053668.jpg rear quarters left and right http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1118053712.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1118053759.jpg see bag repairs in the past http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1118053832.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1118053890.jpg |
The rust areas on the rear quarter panels are typical of these early targas, yours actually looks like a mild case from what I can see here...;-)
|
Yes Bill it looks like but only outer skin, all inner panels (even inner rocker) are sound - and this is good.
I was surprised months ego when I first time drive my Targa that it is no more flexible than my last coupe, especially when I expected just opposite situation as describe in many places in our BBS. I was user surprise when I found that. Today I thin that probably my coupe (inner panels-as construction) was eaten ny rost and was more flexible. Especially than when you have right paint car and not use in rain or snow it can eat panels under step by step before you will see it outside. I so happy that my 911S Targa comes with eaten wings as I decide to proper operation - means total rebuilding. Today I see that only this way is right. We should find right model of the car, with good engine, trany, and outside rust, if inner panels are OK you have a lot of work but it is the best idea - you know what you have. Of cure it cost time and money but result ...I hope will be as new car. As I write i give myself deadline for body work and painting 15.07. So within days I will finish striping and start to reassembling new panels and cure Small bad things as well. Meantime some photos from yesterday work http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1118131215.jpg outer rocker open : see oil cooler cables in place, inner rocker seems to be perfect http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1118131375.jpg battery boxes both side -perfect no rust http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1118131437.jpg outer rocker out :see bad repair -somebody rivet some path instead of weld all new rocker Today I should finis ed striping bad places! Let see what I find! |
Tomy, you're going great guns on that thing, and I bet it's going to look great. Are you located in Poland?

Tomy,
W jakim miescie jestes? |
Tomy,
You might want to find some old steel wheels to put on the car before you start the actual bodywork. Those Fuchs don't grow on trees these days. Plus you can get to work on polishing them in the evenings after dinner...;-) |
PM to Dave
Dave you have PM from me

Ianc yes I am from Poland

So hello to everybody.
Yesterday I take out right rocker as well as take off oil cooler as I need to replace some small parts of panels around and it is good opportunity to clean oil cooler. Next parts ordered: -2 door screw (as we damage 2 during striping) -front fender rubber pipe (this short piece of rubber) to tank as broken partly -all new hardware to fenders -tape between fender and inner panels Till Sunday I would like to finish right side of the car means all small repairs and put new panels :rocker, fender support, door lock post, and of course repair back right wings as I cut off part of it. From Monday I would start left side.Till now I am in time. So work is follow on and hope that I will see progress shortly. Now is the time (still) that I strip cut of and take out panels, and old patches looks like my 911 is going to be like cheese but ok it is right step You will see how it will look at the end -hope shortly. |

So I rescue inner wheel arch in right way. As well as door support (in lower part I had have rust and holes so second patch here!)http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1118260801.jpg So will see tomorrow next step.... |

First, I have post replay with pictures 3-4 hours ago and it disappeared?!
So I do it again. Yesterday I work still with my right side of the rockers and now have some progress. It was part of the panel near oil lines to cutoff and rebuild http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1118440584.jpg and today looks : http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1118441023.jpg I decide to repair front fender as new panels cost here 1.200$ and it looks bad but could be repair correctly - expected time whole one day of work with right fender. The same will be with left one. So I loose 2-3 days but will have some free bugs for next steps of my resto. I will upload more pictures tomorrow |
this is an excellent restoration. You're working so fast I'm wondering how quickly you will finish :D
|
Nice work, you are really taking care of business! What tools are you using to cut and bend your patches? What gauge steel are you using for your patches?
|
Great work! Where do you order your parts from in Poland?

First about parts: I buying parts via Porsche dealer here and sometimes in US as in US is sometimes cheaper (why? I don't know we have here only mils to Porsche Factory...)
About tools I use typical tools as well. Of course for body panels I use some tools made by me. (see I have nothing to do with automotive business and my education is computer science , Porsche restoration is my hobby) See front wings work from Friday workday. Somebody again use riveting as panels rebuild : it looks that he probably haven't have welding machine, I am under surprise as it takes time and effects are bad with times go. See what I find: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1118648654.jpg And how it looks when I take it off:  http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1118648777.jpg So my friends : never use riveting or If you must pls make correct undercoating from second side as within year or two you have twice much rust as before! Let see what will be today..... |

Ten days ago it looks like : http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1118836335.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1118836405.jpg As you remember I cut off part of the wing: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1118836520.jpg And build new part as you see... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1118836606.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1118836682.jpg some drawings during thinking...how to build patch http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1118836760.jpg I will definitely finished right side till Saturday night. |
