7R fuchs were also made in 1970 + info

Hi,

Looking more closely at some 7R wheels over the week I found that my own pair are date stamped 6/70. I guess these must have been made for an ST. I did think they were all made in 67, but I guess not.

I also saw an original 7R rim with all the original ink stamps. I will see if I can get some high res pics. The wheel is very unique and also has shows some interesting stuff. For example it is also date stamped 6/70 but on the fuch/fox ink stamp it is dated 0570. Also it shows the last digits of the original stamped part number from when it was a deep 6 wheel while the rest is machined off. I have seen this machine marks on plenty of 7R rims but never one where they have missed some of the original part number. I have read that these wheels were made by taking a deep 6 and “spinning” it out. If this is true should a deep 6 weight the same as a 7R wheel. I will find out later?

Thanks

Alan.UK

I have measured many years ago that early tubetype 6 (901 361 012 06) should weight 5,7 kg just like early 7R (901 361 012 05). I have always wondered how they can both weigth the same. I have measured too that the late tubeless type 6 (911 361 020 10) weights only 5,4 kg.

I have NOT done these measurements at the same time or with the same scales. So, I am not 100% sure about them. But, can anybody second my measurements ??

Here's a discussion over on the VW board. Weights are listed near the bottom.

My R wheels have 67 and 68 dates, and both weigh the same as a 5.5, which is less than an early 6.

Nice info and nice discussion.

One thing is sure, 7Rs are not that rare. I have owned 7 and I know many other pairs. There must be more than couple of hundreds of them.

I have owned over 20 over the years. Interestingly, never had one cracked.
