911 Sighting-back of trailer-Atlanta, GA (pics)

This appears to be a solid 911. Sorry about the pics but it is raining right now in Atlanta.

Is this a 911S, 911T etc?...

A nice find. At least he know enough to place the PORSCHE backward on the trailer so the weight of the car is on the hitch.

I'm looking at having an aluminum trailer built and they said the axle placement (2) is dependant on what type of car (front or rear engine) you will carry. Up until now I assumed that you would want the trailer balanced (SLIGTLY toe heavy), with the most weight centered over the axles. Is this not the case?

Thanks!

normally you would want most of the weight center over the axle of the trailer, however being in a less than perfect world, you do not want all the weight at the back of the trailer because it will cause the opposite end to lift up (think of a see saw). The best solution to trailer a 911 is to back it onto most trailer.

I have an 18' trailer like the one pictured and if you pull the 911 to the front of the trailer, it tows just fine. The "trick" is to get the c/l of the car's rear axle within 6" or so of the trailer's rear axle c/l. There's plenty of weight tranferred to the tongue and loading is an easy one-man operation.

...what Tim said. AS long as there's more weight on the tongue, you wont be getting the trailer whipsawign back & forth at speed.

Unless your into that sort of adventure. Try it with a Bobcat sometime, now that's fun.

And for another type of adventure, use a medium sized motorhome as a tow vehicle; preferably one with a LONG rear overhang. About 53' overall length, but it tracks beautifully.

tim,
any tips on towing the 911 behind the 'ol motorhome on a car carrier? i have a tow dolly for this, but have never used it..i'm kinda afraid to use it actually and think it best to upgrade to what you use. here's a pic of my car and 35' safari:

Ryan, nice match on the colors of your motorhome and "dinghy"! We've added orange graphics to the Airstream since that picture and Sue thinks I should paint my latest project Tangerine (imagine).

I've heard a couple of mechanics recommend NOT to use a dolly with a 911 for extended trips. Short hops are OK, but you probably wouldn't be using the MH then. In addition to possible transaxle damage, think about how low the rear of the 911's tailpipe would be.

Get the lightest trailer you can, with brakes; any extra weight being pulled by your MH only adds to the strain on the drivetrain. Plan ahead, remember your braking distances, etc. As always, don't be in a hurry.

BTW, a friend of mine used his 40' pusher to deliver a 35' travel trailer to his son stationed in Texas. Yup, 80' overall length rolling down I-10!
