Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I was told as your valve guides wear they allow oil into the exhaust. The heat from a cat would burn this up so you would see no smoke. Unless of course it is excessive then a cat won't even help. On the other hand the premuffler does not get as hot as a cat and has a higher flow. So if there is any oil seeping, it will now show up as smoke in the exhaust.

If your car smokes all the time driving around then you have some kind of oil leak in the combustion chamber either from valves guides, piston rings or both.
If your car smokes and then stops smoking when you start it up, it's common and normal. The rings rotate around on the pistons and depending how long you let your car sit, a tiny bit of oil will seep into the combustion chambers- thus the puff of blue smoke.
