My guess is that a '78 SC goes for 3-4K more than a '77.

Wider stance, bigger wheels (15 vs. 16), bigger and better engine by far, etc. I would think the engine alone would be worth 3 - 4. Looks would be worth an extra 1. Was 77 body galvenized?
My two cents?

price is based on condition, whether '77 or '78..all things being equal, maybe a difference of a grand..

The SC might cost you more but the engine should last a lot longer, so you will save money there.
You also get the flared rear guards which make a lot of difference in the looks dept. In Australia there is about $8,000 difference in price. Between a 77 2.7 and a SC. But then we also get the 77 3.0 Carrera here.

my 78 SC had 3 broken lower studs....went in to fix & got into the "while you'r at it's "......$6,000 + later it was up & running with all the politically correct "upgrades"....Sold it!!!
have a 75 2.7.........LOVE IT !!! go with your gut on this one...if you really want that SC...go for it. If your not sure...listen to the gut !

It would most likely have given you trouble free motoring, after that much spent (was it rebuilt). Now you have purchased 2.7 porsche the same thing could happen to you next week. (fingers crossed you will have trouble free motoring with this car also).

I consider the SC's to be a far better car than the mid-years, in many areas. Engine. flares. galvanizing. (77's were made in 1976. I suspect that some of the '77 MY cars were galvanized, and some were not.) The '78 and '79 SC engines had a remarkably robust fuel and intake system, that can support internal engine upgrades just a bit better. In other words, if you ever did have to open the engine, higher compression pistons (late SC pistons, 9.3:1, can be had cheap) alone would make that car a screamer.

The 77 is a lighter car. The SC is probably a safer buy though.

my '74 comes stock with the quick 7:31 tranny, is a couple hundred pounds lighter, no emissions, no rust (point taken - all these cars should be checked), has the desireable exhaust with great note, engine mods all done..all things being equal there's no other stock sc i'd be willing to trade my car for if we're talking mid-year vs. sc arguments..

Regardless of how much you like your car, there are market realities one must face when buying or selling a car. In my neck of the woods a '78 SC easily goes for $3-5K more than the same condition '77 2.7.

Hello everyone,I went to seethe 78 today and was a little disapointedbecause it had a few problems.it came up from Arizona 15 years ago and the current owner has had it sincealthough I don'tt think he spent a lot of time or money on upkeep A couple of things bother me,first he had it painted 5 years ago but a low budget job, more important the pass door sticks out a bit at the top and the gap is not even so that has me concerned.we drove the car and it seemed to pull allright, much different from my 77 in that it had more power of course but it also felt much softer and the clutch was so easy todepress I liked the ride but when we pulled back in his driveway and got out smoke was billowing from under the pass wheel.looking under I could see a fair bit of oil on the heat exchanger although ther were no spots on his drive or in the garage, ofcourse I will have a ppi done if I am interested but Iam not sure if I should just stick with my 77s. What to do??

But there are heaps of SC's so finding a good one shouldn't be too hard. It always works out cheaper in the long run to pay a premium for a good car, and have little problems and good re-sale, than get a rough one and be spending money on it all the time. And if you get a good one you will enjoy it more as well.
