901 clutch fork problem
 

3 years ago i had the pivot bolt on the clutch fork arm changed
yesterday i was driving around and when i shifted to third
the clutch pedal went to the floor (snap sound)
checked the cable under the car ,all ok the clutch fork is loose
,,is the a aftermarket pivot bolt that is better than the factory
i have the 901 model,, i think that the original part was made from brass
also is there a good mecanic in the Montreal area that could fix this for me before the Montreal GrandPrix

Sounds like you own either a 70 or 71 911. They used a 225mm pull type clutch with a 901 gearbox. I have a converted one in my 914.

They used a fairly weak clutch pivot. The only way to fix this is to pull the transmission. Once it's out, then you can replace the pivot with a hardened steel one, available from our sponsor. If the threads have pulled out of the trans case, dont' try a heli-coil or anything similar. You are only asking for the problem to come back.

Open the trans up and remove all the components, including the differental (now is a good time to replace all the seals). Have a machinest make a top hat shaped insert with the proper threads (8mmx1.25 IIRC). Machine the case to accept the insert as a press fit from the INSIDE of the housing. If this is done correctly, and you put in the hardened steel pivot, you will not have the problem again.
