MFI Problem
 

My 1972 E was not started for several years and now won't fire on cylinders 2 & 4. There is no fuel getting to the injectors on those cylinders as determined by breaking the fittings at head while running. Can anyone help? It wouild be appreciated. Chris

First, always remember the search feature is your friend.

Next, what did you do, exactly? With the engine stumbling along you disconnected the injection lines from cylinders 2 and four and no fuel squirted all over the place? Need more detail there.

So your mechanical fuel pump is like a VR6 engine. It has two rows of three cylinders driven off a common camshaft. The cylinders are flooded with fuel, in amounts that vary depending on the movement of a common toothed rack that slides back and forth, moving all of the cylinders in unison, so the mixture is the same for all the engine cylinders. The only way that you could get NO fuel from two of them would be:

1) kinked or obstructed steel injection lines from pump to injector; or
2) gum, rust, or foreign matter in the mechanical fuel pump that is blocking cylinders 2 and 4.

If it's the first problem, it's a simple matter of carefully removing them, soaking up any fuel that spills (and make sure you disconnect the batteries (both of them) before you do ANY of this, we don't need you looking like that guy on the front of the Rage against the Machine record), carefully removing the lines and blowing through them with compressed air.

If it's the second problem, it's time to cash in a few bonds and have the MFI pump rebuilt. Do a search for "Supertec" and "MFI" and or "Pacific Fuel Injection" and all will be revealed.

You may have broken something inside the pump when turning the motor over after the long sleep. Have you taken the belt off and spun the pump by hand to see if everything is good?
