Speed Odometer Gears
Tha odometer of my 911 is not working. The milage counter is working but it don't register how many miles I have travel from here to there .
Where can I get the famous gear that worn out? Cordially VicSmileWavy |
Check the search feature, my friend.(Jeez, I sound like a true Pelican.)
Many, many thtreads and info on this. Hollywood Speedometer seems to be the preferred repair shop for this. IMO, I wouldn't even try to DIY. I did and what a PIA! Ended up sending it out anyway. DOH!!! |
|
Not a bad job for a DIY, take your time and follow the directions in 101, also do the search as directed, there are many detailed instructions (including my own). I'll tell ya, you can spend $100+ for someone to do it for you, or $25 and a couple hours yourself...your choice.

Okay
Thank's all for the Information

Gues what..?
I just opened the Speedo as required and found that the gear is completely desintegrated. The only info. that I have is that the speedo porsche part is a 911 641 545 01 and the speedo runs or is calibrated 85mph and 140km. This is a 1982 SC Targa I just wonder If someone of knows how many gears. Cordially VicSmileWavy |

Tracher and Friends
As you can see the Odometer gear has disapear http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1118790198.jpg I disasemble and replaced the gear supplyed by Instruments Gears http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1118790296.jpg I took of the bushing and drill to size http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1118790372.jpg I'm using a WD 40 tube http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1118790433.jpg Fixed ........will try tomorow http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1118790477.jpg Thanks for the help VicSmileWavy |
Fixed and working perfectly

Good for you! That WD40 tube actually looks pretty good.
If you have access to either a GPS or radar, you should check the accuracy since the needle was removed. |
I don't get what you mean about the wd40 tube? I did the same thing two weeks ago. Replacing the gear was easy, but I broke the needle shaft too. I ended up sending it to North Hollywood, so I didn't save any money, but I learned the proper way to remove the needle - twist counterclockwise while pulling - no sideload. I would do it again if I had to.
|
I think he's saying his needle (not the shaft, the orange indicator) broke off and he replaced it with a section of a wd-40 aerosol tube
|
No I meant The shaft...!
I drill the original shaft bearing to the size of the WD-40 size tubing and installed in place of the needle shaft http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1118865546.jpg Sorry I don't have a photo since I was so in to it that I forgot. Then I replaced the counter face http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1118865628.jpg And then I instaled the counter needle. There is a mark for the counter nedle so that you can put it in the proper position. I just try it today and it is working perfect very sory you guys that I din't took pixes because is an alternative fix Cordially VicSmileWavy |
oh, my bad. Now I see. I never got that far into the guts since my needle stayed on the whole time. Very clever - and pre-lubricated with WD-40!
|
The drilled hole is 1000th of inch biger than the tubing and it moves freely

Which Gear?
I have a 85mph/140kmh speedo. I need the gear but mine has broken into little bitty pieces. I was told I need the standard 30 tooth gear. Does anyone else have any knowledge on this?

I don't, but call the guy who makes the gears and sells them at www.odometergears.com - "To contact us please call: 757-593-3478"
