993 exhaust upgrade

looking to upgrade the exhaust for a '97 993 C4S. any recommendations? GHL? B&B? etc...??? looking for a "more aggressive" sound; but nothing too radical. the car is for street use. thanks in advance for any and all replies.

Well, I'm on my 5th set of mufflers on my 993, so I have some experience here. GHL's and Fabspeed MaxFlos cost and sound about the same. I had MaxFlos on when I got my car and loved them. Then I drilled the airbox for a little more grunt. Then I trashed the car on the track and the Maxflos were really bent up. Insurance-designated repair shop replaced them with GHL's. They looked very cool, but I was steamed about them not asking me first. Then I heard a friend's Supercups and really fell in love. Then I came into a great deal on MaxFlos and several people told me Supercups were too loud for hwy. driving. So I put on my new MaxFlos about 3 wks. ago and am selling my 1000 mile old GHL's to a friend.

Yesterday, I sat in a friend's 993 with Supercups and held the gas down while at 4k rpms. Sounds totally awesome, but very loud. MaxFlos are just right - quiet but nice for normal driving, loud but nice when you step on it.

Oh, and B&B's sound pretty good on a 993 too. I know two guys who have them and I've driven one such car. Very nice. You can't go wrong with any of them.

I have stock mufflers on my car, but i have the cat bypass pipes from fabspeed. certainly is much louder and better than stock alone.
just my 2 cents.

I put the RSRs on my 993, along with a carbon fiber Fabspeed open airbox. I was disappointed with the sound... good, but just barely louder than stock. But I have heard that they get louder with time. Then I put a Fabspeed cat bypass pipe on... whoa... car was so loud I was embarassed to drive it. Put on Fabspeed Maxflows and LOVE the sound. Nice and throaty with great burbles on decel. The only thing I regret is that I can no longer hear the fan whine, which to me is a big part of the air-cooled 911 experience. If I had to do it all over again, I would probably stay stock with a modified airbox. Just my .02

Steve Timmins does top-notch work and I've seen his mufflers when at his house. But from that photo, it looks like they omit the cat, which probably isn't legal in too many places.

The RSR mufflers as mentioned above are my fav. I agree w/ MOTION, that they aren't loud enough, but the sound quality is what i like about them. Instead of a deep/throaty sound (not that there's anything wrong with that), it produces a higher pithched snarl, esp at higher rpm's. The RSR's sound very similar to the factory "motor sound pkg" (consists of modified airbox + different muffler).

I used the Instant-G set up pn my 3.6 993 SC conversion and it is an awesome set-up. It sounds good - it is loud but not obnoxious or droning. It didn't come with cats but I put some 6" race cats on it.

I bought Fabspeed Supercups for my 97 993 and hated them. I had them on the car for a few hours and couldn't wait to get them off. I traded them for Fabspeed Maxflos...nice mufflers.
While I was waiting for the Maxflow to be delivered, I cut open the stock mufflers and modified them. They really sound good and I think I may put them back on. If your interested, I would sell the Maxflos for $750.

I hope rdane doesn't mind me posting a picture of his car, but here is a muffler by Triad that mounts directly to your 993 HEs (if you aren't looking for a full exhaust conversion) and are supposed to sound a little louder than stock.

Now that I have your attention, is anyone getting rid of their 993 heat exchangers completely while performing this upgrade? I am interested in a set of used headers for my car. Thanks.

Mike,

Word of caution!

We supply and fit plenty of Porsche road and track exhausts, and we have for years experimented with various types.

A customer recently brings us a 993RS (3.8) with a factory system. We fitted a very nice exhaust and LOST 6 bhp on the wheels! Sounded great though... The same exhaust made good power on a 3.6. Well - we had to make another new system and eventually gained good power - but it was a lesson learnt.

Early 911's suffered from poor exhausts due to heaters, emission regs, etc, however by the time the 993 came around the exhaust was pretty good. Test your car BEFORE fitting a new system and 'challenge' the supplier to match or improve your performance.

You may also have to change the mapping of your engine to really benefit from the new exhaust.

Sorry - probably can't help you due to distance...

Regards, Tom

thanks again for all the replies.

tom, this is a street car, a '97C4S with 30K miles. it's really the sound i'm after - a notch up from the factory setup. a few hp + or - is no concern.

Mike,

If you are after great sound then try find a system made from a big diameter stainless with no cross-over section. Stainless has THAT special 'clarity' and a cross-over box sometimes creates 'booming' - resonance at certain rpm's.

I would also recommend that you change the air filter element – this ‘clears the throat’ and the induction sound is awesome.

Violins and piano in symphony… Enjoy

Tom

Max Flows are WAY too quiet. Supercups are too loud. But with C&C inserts, they are perfect.
