Flank's 71 Targa restro - Roll over loop replacement
 

Hi all. Continuing on the restro, after the floor pan replacement (earlier thread)http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/225546-flanks-71-targa-intro-restro-floor-pan-replacement.html I replaced the Targa roll over loop. If there ever was going to be any hope of having the rear window fit properly, I had to really made a lot of "locating aids" to attach the new loop. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1118335715.jpg and http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1118335772.jpg there were several places on the original loop to attach these locator's, I was able to make these for locating the roll over loop at the front, bottom, and back. I still have these if any one is compleplating doing such a thing. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1118335977.jpg Since the loop and were it attaches is hollow, I made a steel sleeve that fit down into the car body, then the loop would slide down over this sleeve. After all of the fitting was done and the metal prepped, I welded the sleeve to the car body and loop by a series of small welds, then eventually welded everything up. I did a lot of measuring and this repair took several months to do. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1118336279.jpg and http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1118336303.jpg I've set the window in place and it looked good, but without installing it with the gasket, I won't know for sure, the car could become a rare 71 with a soft rear window! In the last pictures you can see the stiffening bar that I made at the beginning of the restoration. On the next 'installment' will be of the "through the rocker oil line installation". Enjoy.

Does anyone have any cooments or questions. I know this kind of repair could be kind of scary or appear unsafe. Although I believe the sleeve is pretty strong, it would of been nice if I didn't have to replace the loop, but it had enough rust to warrant a repair on all four corners, plus an area on the top. In stead of a whole bunch of little repairs, I elected to just replace the loop outright. Thanks.

My only question is where did you find a rear soft window or more specifically, the hardware. Or what hardware is needed. I was thinking of making mine a soft window and "World of Upholstry" makes the window but I don't knoe what else is needed.

I didn't look for a soft window, yet. That was only incase the fixed glass won't go in anymore. My poor attempt at humor. If there ever is a soft window being parted out. You could find out what all is needed. Thanks.
