Odd Throttle Response
 

I noticed something odd last night, driving for the first time since my first engine drop.

There are situations where applying throttle will raise RPM, without seeming to get any additional power to the wheels. For instance: cruising at about 2500rpm in second gear. If I gradually apply more throttle, everything will work as expected clear through to redline. if I get on the throttle hard, however, at around 3000rpm the motor will to run up, but I will feel little or no additional power at the wheels. I just keep cruising at the same speed, even though I may end up turning ~6000rpm. In this situation if I let the rpm drop back down a bit and reapply throttle slowly, the car will behave normally again.

This is coming after an engine drop where the transmission stayed in the car. An oil return tube, thermostat o-ring, and oil pressure switch were all replaced. What am I missing?

Could it be the clutch?

Did you adjust the clutch correctly? It sounds like the clutch is not fully engaging.

Hmm... good call... I don't know how to adjust the clutch correctly, so it is unlikely I stumbled on the right way to do it. Are we talking about the adjustment screw on the lever, or something else?

Don't drive it anymore until you get this resolved, you could be burning up your clutch disc.
Get a hayne's manual and follow the procedure, it is fairly involved the first time.
You have to remove the cable, set a clearance, then re-install the cable and adjust the cable until the clrarance is changed slightly. I can't remember the measurements off the top of my head, something like .040" to start and then reduce it to .030" with the cable.

Wayne's guide ( here ) has that at 1.2mm, which should be just a bit more than you are suggesting. Now I just need to find something of the correct thickness (or a tool, as shown above), I guess.

Yep, that's it. Like I said I wasn't sure about the measurements, it's been a while and I have CRS ;)

You have to set that clearance with the cable disconnected and they install the cable and adjust until the clearance is reduced by a certain amount.
Feeler guages as shown in that picture are relatively cheap, easy to find, and a must have if you are going to be working on your car. I bet you can find a decent set for under $10 and they will last forever if you take care of them and don't let them rust.
