got my windows tinted (pics)

I just got my windows tinted this afternoon. I know alot of you are not fans of tint, but here in South Louisisna it is as essential as A/C if you wanna try to stay cool......plus the benefit of the uv protection for the interior.

So I thought that I would share a few pics

Tint really seems to suit the white-coloured cars best for some reason. The previous owner on my old (white) 87 924S had the windows slightly tinted, and they looked pretty good.

I always thought there was some kind of law against tinting? Is it very expensive? Does it really help with staying cool, say if you have a black ('triple black') car?
Looks good.

it is 18% both sides and rear. I am hoping that I don't atract too much attention from the police. Its a little darker than its supposed to be.

I totally agree, tint looks better than no tint on white cars.

That looks GREAT! I must apologize for not posting pics of my car's tinted windows, but the weather here has not been cooperative at all. Nothin' but rain for what seems like an eternity! I think you made the right decision, not only for appearance, but the cooling benefits as well as preservation of the interior. To top it off, you might want to consider getting a custom windshield screen to cover the dash during the day. Every little bit helps!

The laws on tinting vary from state to state. here is a link to the state tint requirements. But double check w/your DMV 1st

http://www.tintdude.com/laws.html

Mine only cost $120 and that was for the darker tint (darker than legel) and I would think on a triple black car it would certainly help the A/C work better.

In most states you can go with about 30 - 35% tint on the front side windows and be legal. Some states will let you go radically darker on the rear side windows. It does help quite a bit to keep the interior cool and shield from UV rays. Tinting materials have progressed a long way. If you pay for quality tint, it will last a long time and won't fade as quickly as the nasty 1980's stuff.

Thanks David, and no problem about the pics.
I appreciate your input, and the front window will be covered just as soon as I get my order delivered from pelican.

Vash I do not have the receipt in front of me right now, but its not supposed to be metallic, it is the best that Llumar makes though, it is 99% UV protected. I'll let you know later what the actual name is. and I'm kinda confused about the comment about bigrubberjeep. please explain (unless thats not directed towards me)

Thanks for all the comments.

Phil, can you please post the name of the tint, or send me a PM? I have a GP white SC that used to have purplish faded tint. The pics of your car convinced me to have the windows retinted. Nice. Very nice. Good choice on the Fikse rims, also.

Although we are not supposed to have the type of heat you have in Louisiana, the late spring and summer so far have been extremely hot and humid in Philadelphia. About two months ago I applied some static cling tint to my rear window, and that has made a difference. I did it to protect the interior.

phil, brj posted a few weeks ago about taking his old tint off. i was waiting for his results before doing my ride. i wanted to save the money of paying someone to do the removal. my car is white too, and it does get hot in my corner of the SF bay area. i am keeping the tint. my present tint is also fading to purple, that and a few rips.

Llumar? i have been outta it for awhile, i only remember the 3M stuff.

Llumar is what I used on mine. They've been in the business a long time. I have had several cars done with Llumar over the years and they all turned out nice. Good stuff. Lifetime warranty.

I'll post the exact name of the tint in the morning, I need to call the installer and ask what exactly the name is, it does not appear on my receipt.

Here's the deal: mix ammonia and water, roughly 2 or 3 tablespoons ammonia to 1 pint of water and a little dish washing soap (just enough to kill the surface tension of the water...you don't want it to be sudsy). Pick a door window or the windshield to try first 'cause that's easy to work on while you get the hang of it.

Spray the mixture on the tint and cover it with a plastic film so it clings to the wet tint (I like a black plastic trash bag that's been cut open)...the plastic keeps the mixture from drying on the tint, i.e. you want it to stay wet. You can do this inside the shop, but the older the tint, the more it helps to be in the sun while the spray mixture does its work (the black plastic helps with this also). The older the tint the longer it needs to soak...be sure it doesn't dry out...pull back the plastic and spray the tint some more if it starts to dry out, but it probably won't be necessary.

After it has soaked for awhile (could take up to an hour for really old tint; less time for newer tint) use a single edge razor blade to carefully loosen an edge of the tint. You should only need the blade to get an edge started...don't screw around with scraping and scraping. You'll know if it has soaked sufficiently because you'll be able to easily peel the tint off the glass.

If it doesn't peel off easily or if it is leaving an adhesive mess on the glass when it does peel you need to let it soak longer...spray some more mixture on it and cover it back up with the plastic film. If you resist the urge to peel the tint prematurely you'll be rewarded with almost no adhesive mess left on the glass and little hassling around scraping with a razor blade. It's pretty easy if you just let the mixture do its thing...definitely too easy to pay someone to do it. Do be careful when you do the rear window if it has defroster conductors on the inside surface. If you do the rear last you'll have the hang of how long to let it soak so you don't risk damaging them with a razor blade.

If you don't want to make up your own spray mix you can just buy the commercial version at most auto parts stores that sell tint and supplies (Autozone, Advance, etc).

Oh...never use a window cleaner with ammonia on your tint unless you want the tint to come off

Just slightly darker then legal since legal is 40% on the fronts. I doubt you will get in trouble but even if you do the dark tint is worth it.

When I bought my Taurus SHO (loved that car until I needed parts) I went with a front and rear tint and the salesman said "So your going with the child molester package". Actually, it looks great.
