clear up an argument roof or rough
I was just in a mild dispute here in my office. Is Ruf pronounced rough or roof? I always assumed rough then I started thinking. I am so insulated by technology, the internet etc... that I am always only ever typing it or reading it in magazines and never pronouncing it. Compounded by the fact that this other guy in my office isn't sure either and his Dad raced a Porsche for years made me realize I need to get an answer to this. Anyway right now it is 1 vote roof 2 votes rough so whoever can clear this up much thanks. Also in a sidebar argument it is Alois Ruf correct?

Tif Needel (of top gear fame) did a piece about ruf's and pronounced it "roof"
However he's a bit of a snob, and I reckon "rough" sounds better whether it's right or not..

I love fift gear a lot but I honestly only understand about 3/4 of the spoken parts. Much of it is their slang but much of it is also the accent and the adjectives they use. I need a buddy or somethign who is British so I can run all these words past them.....I am sue some British guy would love that huh.......any takers to our English friends on the BBS. I could seriously make a helluva list for ya to translate.

Run a ton?, Go like the clappers?? (what is a clapper), what is a barge (I am thinking maybe it is a semi), is a roundabout just a curve, what does bits mean (it seems to mean everything), Why sometimes do you use mph and sometimes kph? Why sometimes do you use horse power and sometimes brick horse I have seen no rhyme or reasons as to why one is used and not the other. Is a twisty bit a curvy road? Why do you have different names for our cars? We don't have different names for your cars. Not to my knowledge anyway. Whatever you guys decided a car should be named we go ahead and respect this and call it as such. This is just for starters Mate or is it bloke? Or is that a negative term. See how confused I am 911mot

No problem dude.
I stayed in New York with some friends once and, without exception, everyone thought we came from Australia. Probably because of the terrible fake english accents on TV dontcha know cor blimey guv

911mot I have to go to a meeting now but here are a few others that leave me puzzeled. To over take is to pass correct? Does Acura not exist is the UK b/c you call everything and Honda NSX Honda RSX, etc... What is a bang about Morris. Is the show called top gear over there and fifth gear over here? And this has nothing to do with language but is that Vicky girl on fifth gear not aware of the fact that her nipples show through her shirt often or is that done to keep viewership up among males (me included I dig Vickers) and do you know if she has any race experience b/c she can really heel toe her way around a track. Thanks

Ok geezer here goes Run a ton----could be 'got to 100mph' . To 'do a ton' is to do 100mph or 'ton-up' Go like the clappers -- means it's fast. Don't know the origin of that. Goes like stink, goes like **** off a shovel, etc A barge is a big long heavy boat. So you get a car that handles like a barge. Unlike a peach. A car that handles like a peach is sweet as a nut. Geddit? A roundabout is a circle (cany be any size from about 3ft diameter to hundreds) in the road at major junctions (some not all). Personally I love them. I dont think we ever use kph - not on road signs or speedos anyway. We don't buy petrol by the gallon anymore either. Not allowed to. But we still need to know how many MPG we get. What the fark does 'Extra Urban 5.20 l/km' mean? Does that mean I can get home on a tenner? Don't know much about changing car names. Probably to to with translation in other european non-english speaking countries. Like pinto means small penis in mexican. Or so the fable goes... laters

5th Gear and Top Gear are two different shows on rival channels here in UK.
VBH has racing experience and she can take me round the block any time she wants. Overtaking is passing yes. What on earth is an Acura?
