Well... Goodbye.

Thanks to an inattentive (and un-insured) truck driver, my little German baby is no longer. In morning traffic on the 405 here in LA I was at the front of a three-car mess. Fortunately the big-rig driver responsible hit a pick-up which then hit me. If he'd hit me directly it might have been a different story. Anyway, I've posted all that before.
The car has been to Kevin (KevinP73) Mentzer, a respected member of this forum, who has determined that the cost to repair my car would exceed it's value, so it's a write-off. I have neither the time nor inclination for another fixer-upper, and I can't afford a 993, so it's time to say goodbye. My Porsche ownership days are done, for a good while, at least.
I've hardly been an active member of this forum (unless you count lurking), but the few times I've asked for help it's been quickly and graciously given. My hat's off again to yelcab1, who rebuilt my pedal cluster for no other reason than to help out a fellow enthusiast, and for free. It still shocks me to think of the amount of support rcecale got when he undertook to rebuild his own transmission. My point is that this board is a great and amazing thing, and it surprises me, as a seasoned skeptic, to think that brotherhood is alive and thriving in this divided world.
So, I've retained salvage, and the car's for sale. I won't get too OT here, and will post more info on the For Sale board. Just quickly though: It's a '78 Euro Targa. Black on black leather. The engine has had a ground-up rebuild, and there can't be more than a 3 or 4,000 miles on it since then. I had all the mods done at the the time - pop-off thing, carrera tensioners, new head studs, turbo valve covers. It has 16x9's on the back (replicas), 16x7's front, and I still have the 16x6's. All have approaching brand new tires. I have a pair of black leather 996 seats waiting to go in, and black leather door panels/handles/door tops/pocket tops from Pelicanite Kevin Cullen. Brand new, just installed black sliverknit carpet set. It runs and drives. I'd like to see $4500 for it - I've seen motors alone go for that. Keep in mind that Kevin's assessment includes his labor cost, and guys at his level of expertise (rightly) charge a lot of of money for their talents. It may be possible for a diy'er to fix it up relatively inexpensively. It may also not - I'm not making any representations here.
Well, thanks to this board for diverting far too much of my attention away from more important things. Perhaps now I can get some real work done ;-)
Best regards, fellas.

OMG a suicide note

We must act fast to save him

I'll start....

Ahem...

That doesn't look that bad. Ok expensive, but thats for a shop to do all the work. There's a lot you can do yourself to get the labour cost down.
Please don't do anything rash for now

Yea...I hate to say it but that car is worth more parted out than fixed.

Don't leave the brotherhood though. Others have been in this position. Take the proceeds and buy yourself another one. You don't need a 993 to have a reliable Porsche. Try a good SC for example.

Sorry to hear about the wreck though.

Don't leave!!! We were just getting to know ya!

Really stinks, what happened to your car. It doesn't mean you need to leave the board. As stated above, you can always work your way into another p-car. Maybe even one that doesn't need to be rebuilt.

Keep an eye out, one will turn up for ya!

Don't give up.

This is not contract law between you and your insurance co., it is a tort by the truck driver.
The truck driver is required to put you back in the place you were before he hit you. That means an equal car (a fixed up one, not a fixer upper) or to repair your car.

I'm sure you feel sick to your stomach now, and that is affecting your decision -- wait a few days. Then go after the trucking firm and its insurance company.

Who was un-insured, the big rig driver or the pickup truck driver? It seems to me if you were at the front of the mess, either the big rig or the pickup truck is responsible for the repair/replacement of your car regardless if one or the other doesn't have insurance. The big rig caused it, and the pickup truck hit you. Sue them both and get back on the road. Sorry to hear about this, but there should be light at the end of this tunnel. Good luck.

"Sue them both..."

- Yeh, that's standard practice. The quote is "Sue them all and let God sort it out..." It was probably modified from the military quote "Kill them all and let God sort it out."

Sorry to hear about the recent crash. You are lucky the Pick-up absorbed the brute impact.
......On your car.
Are the door gaps pushed forward?
Are the motor mounts pushed forward?
Additional pictures of the sides?
....... I might be interested in it.

I'm gonna jump on the band wagon here and ask you not to sell your car at all! My god, you have all the pieces to build up a really really nice early car with a great 3.0 and and SC front end...brakes...fuchs. AND, if you find a decent early car with a 7.31 915 tranny, you could be in for a really nice ride. Not to mention the black on black interior you have and the 996 seats. Then you can sell off your remaining parts and probably come out of there relatively cheap with a clear title on an awesome early 911. Lets try to turn this negative into a positive!!

Depends on the police report. My roommate was hit from behind which made him hit a car in front of him. The force of the accident pushed him into the car in front him making him not at fault for any damages.

What does the report say? oh and sorry thats terrible news.

Restoring an older car is always a risk if you don't have insurance for the true value/replacement value. This should be a warning for everyone to get their car insured for its value.

The car seems to be still solid without changes to the body...no fender movement. I think it could be fixed but the cost would be around $10,000. Your insurance should be suing the other drivers...as long as you have collision coverage.

Nope....they'll both have a differing percent of the liability. The pickup truck even if pushed was following too close.

This looks like another expensive lesson in insurance as people continue to insure these cars like the family minivan.

When will they learn????
