Interior Materials

I feel like an idiot, but...

Can anyone tell me what materials are used for the interior of my '79 930? I'm trying to figure out which pieces are natural & should be leather conditioned and which are synthetic/plastic/vinyl. I can't distinguish, and I don't want to put leather conditioner on non-leather pieces.

I have the seats figured out.

Can post pictures if needed.

I would use Lexol Leather Cleaner on all of the parts, then finish with Lexol Leather Conditioner. I've had great results from this stuff and I don't work for Lexol, just a satisfied customer...

Skip, It all looks like vinyl to me. Maybe the rear seat backs are leather. Tough call with the pictures.

I second Lexol as well. Their products have worked great for me in repairing the interior but once the panels are sun faded as most of mine are, its hard to bring them back without replacing them.

10 and 11 are definitely not leather. 8 is a 90% sure.

Thanks all...

I use Lexol on the seat front/face with good results. However, when I used on the seat back (which I later determined to be vinyl) it leaves a hazy streaky finish. Hence my hesitation to use on the other pieces in question.

Isn't Lexon only for natural/leather?

I'm pretty sure #1, 5 & 8 are the same material. #7 seems close (if not the same) as well.

Did Porsche us different material in these cars? Were there different options available?

Thanks again...

When I first got my 84 Carrera I asked the same question, under the impression that at least my seats were leather. One of my all-time favorite posts came back in response. It said, in it's entirety: "The only thing leather on your car is wrapped around the steering wheel."

You are a little luckier. It looks like you have the famous Porsche "partial leather" seats. Only the middle part of the seat, where you actually sit, is leather. The rest of the interior (except the steering wheel) is leatherette.

I defer to the rest of the board on how to care for leatherette.

It's also possible the door panels are leather. They were also sometimes a feature of a partial leather interior. You'll just have to examine them closely. Use all senses. I am pretty sure 1, 7, 8, 10 and 11 are leatherette, which is vinyl, so you can use your favorite vinyl treatment. You could use the same thing on 6, which is some other plastic, possibly polystyrene.

Is there a seam between 4 and 5? If those two are in very good shape, then I would guess (especially since you are in TX) they are vinyl, too.

I have used Lexol on my vinyl parts w/o any problems, although I have a cork, not black, interior.

MRM: I'm not sure this is correct. It is my understanding and confirmed by Peter Morgan's book that partial leather seats were standard from 1984. My same year Euro has this partial leather package. In any case it should indicate what you have on the code decal next to the latch under the hood.

Skip, I have a 79 turbo and number 11 is vinyl on mine. I have a 87 factory slantnose and number 11 is leather. You can see the cross stitching of the leather on this part.

It doesnt hurt to treat the vinyl also with the conditioner.
