need performance help guys!

I'm pretty much a newbie. This is my 3rd porsche and i'm lovin it. I recently got a 911sc targa (1980) and was wondering what are some things i can do to get power? carbs are confusing and hard to maintain. Is there anything i can do myself? I also live in California and smog tests are a pain up here. It came with a motormeister muffler and everything else is stock. Thanks!!

Make sure your car is 100% up to snuff (tune up, adjustments, in good shape, etc...) and the CIS is adjusted correctly. Make sure when you floor the gas pedal the throttle is opening all of the way. Rev the engine all of the way to redline (plenty of people miss out on this one)

As for California smog legal mods, I'm not sure how much you can do legally. The easiest thing would probably be to lighten the car. The highest gain in power would probably be to drop a 3.6L from a late model car into your chassis.

A device that makes noise and blows a lot of hot air!

Welcome to the Forum. You will find everything you need.
Don’t let these guys beat up on you; learn to use the Search Function. Entering such keywords as ”MM”, “Motor Shyster”, "crook", and more will give you the picture of what they are alluding to.

Your ’80 911SC should be great in stock form with everything working right. Of course there are things you can do – much more than you can imagine. Browse the Forum and you will see. The Search Function works great. Some areas of immediate interest to you might be engine oil cooling, handling, and performance while still meeting the dreaded CARB test.

Again, WELCOME.

Best,
Grady

SSI's are a great HP upgrade for your car.

The only downside of SSIs is that you have to swap the stock heat exchangers and cat back every two years for a smog check.
