Fuel Filter Question (79SC)

I just pulled off a Bosch 0 450 905 016 fuel filter off my 79 SC. According to the Parts Catalog it should have had a Bosch 0 450 905 021 on it.

Is it possible a PO or mechanic screwed this up?

The car is currently leaking fuel from one of the lines behind the fuel filter and fuel accumulator, so this is the least of my problems, but it left me scratching my head.

My gut is telling me that I should replace it with the proper filter, but I'm hoping someone out there can tell me if the fittings are the same between the two.

The fittings on the lines are actually different. At least they were on my filter, which was from a '76 911 with a '78 engine (the '76 plumbing was not updated). I found out that the top end of the filter would fit fine, but the bottom end was too small to fit the line with the new '78 filter. I ended up getting a '76 filter, but went to a local Porsche shop and bought the correct filter, line, and accumulator for a '78 engine later on. Your filter appears to be from a '74 updated filter or a '77 911. This was most likely a P.O or mechanic mess up. If it were me, I would go by the nearest parts supplier (or call and ask and give them the measurements of the fuel line) and test fit a '78 filter and see if it would work on the fuel line first.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. For now I've decided to attempt to clean up the mess. Since that area is already having problems it seems like a good idea.

There's something about the thought of fuel squirting on a hot engine that would bother me if I didn't fix it all up!
