73 RS Bumper ends extensions?
Someone in So Cal was selling end caps that enabled a decent weldor to convert the 69-73 rear bumpers into RS touring versions. Any leads?
thanks dave |

Hey Dave Sorry I cant find the info. you are looking for
Quick question. I put RS fiberglass bumpers on my 73. The bumper supports right behind the rear wheels are now too short. I cludged some "extensions" on for some support. Is there a more elegant solution? Are SC supports longer?

elombard: get some tubing that slips over the oe 74-89 extensions (when cut)- and re weld the tabs back on the ends. The 74-89 supports are longer and smaller diameter than the pre 74 units and have flat threaded plates that lend themselves well to the fiberglass bumpers

About 10 years ago, I bought a set from Troutman. I am sure they do not sell them anymore....?
You'd think there would be enough demand (?) that someone could stamp out a 100 sets and sell them quite easily....?

Just got off the phone with Bill- no longer in the Porsche biz and most certainly no extensions, drawings, or prototypes.
Ok- we have a metal stamper that makes stuff for us locally in short runs. If i can get a sample left/right bumper set to borrow for a few weeks i can make molds and do a run of them- it would be great for Touring bumper sets anyone game to help out? thanks dave

i will start with correct RS ends first. Kurt Williams has posted what you can do with SC bumper extensions (see in the parts threads) - modifying welding and smoothing them into the stock pre 73 bumpers- this has been done a # of times and imho it looks fantastic, but it is not "correct" in the RS world.
Just need the "donors" to borrow for a little bit...

I just finished modifying mine. It's not as
hard as I thought, but it is labor intensive. The left bumper was bad, so I bought a second one, cut off the end, cut the bad bumper's end about 1/2 an inch longer and grafted it to the good bumper. That is the ideal way. For the right bumper, I cut it and added a 1/2 inch of metal at the cut in order to give the length necessary to meet the flare. Here are a few pics. First is where I cut the end off the "good" bumper, last pic is with the 1/2 inch longer end of the "bad" bumper tacked on, and the others are the finished bumpers. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited by Mike O'Meara; 06-15-2005 at 05:37 PM.. |

mike: that is basically what the factory did- if you saw a pair of new RS bumpers, the back side has a bunch of longitudinal hammer strike marks from the maker where they bent it out. Then you have to consider the way flares are installed. Granted they should always be the same, but....
hence our desire to get sections made so it would be a breeze to line them up and weld them in place

I agree, I searched this forum last fall looking for the very thing and finally gave up and did it my own way. I'd have loved to have a pre-made extension. Hope y'all can get some made. I really like the looks of the RS Touring.
Here's another idea, what about the aluminum bumper end pieces? I don't think they are available, are they? I plan to cut mine to cover the top and bottom and leave the horizontal underside uncovered, but it would be nice to find a couple of correct ones. |
