Fabspeed Exhaust Help

I am interested in putting a Fabspeed Euro Premuff and Muffler Bypass on my 84 Targa. I know it will be loud, but how difficult is the install? Could I do it on a weekend day? Should I get a shop to do it, if so, how many hours should it take? Thanks

Piece of cake... I have it down to under half an hour. Then again, I've done it a few dozen times.

Any tips? How hard is it going to be to get the old cat/muffler off? It has been on there for over 20 yrs.

Are you getting the 2 out version? I think the single out is quieter but they make it so you can add a second out. Has anyone compared the noise level of these different mufflers? I remember Grassroots Motorsports did a comparision with VWs.

The Tech articles say use rust penetrant oil for a day before...and hope you don't break any bolts.

My only piece of advice is to just replace all the bolts with new ones while you're in there. Why put old rusty bolts on your new shiny parts? I got a bunch of stainless steel ones from OSH for real cheap!

It isn't a muffler, it is a muffler bypass. It is like a megaphone, they have a video sample on fabspeed.com; it is only $50, so if I don't like it, I can just bolt on the stock muffler and sell it for about $25. BTW, what new bolts do I need, and where can I get them? Thanks

If this is what you are installing on your car:

Then you are installing a type of premuffler in place of your cat. It's been pretty well established that using just a piece of pipe in lieu of the cat reduces horsepower, unless substantial other changes in your engine are accomplished.

Well nobody else here offered you the advice you're looking for. Go for it, you'll be happy, but you'll have to contend with corroded bolts/nuts most likely. Heat is best, get or borrow a torch, they come in handy. Do a search, there are plenty of threads, but the key is to get the nuts cherry red, IMMEDIATELY tighten them about 1/16 of a turn or less, then loosen them. It's worked like a charm on my car, including the studs when I put headers on.

This is were that little Dremmel tool in the garage becomes handy. All my bolts were rusted out and had to be cut. The Dremmel did it. After that I bought stainless steel bolts and nuts to put the pipe on and the new mufller (Dansk Dual out). You will probably spend sometime dealing with the rusted bolts (If they are original). Some may come out easy.

Good luck, Remember to use goggles if you decide to do it yourself.

I see, you want to install what I pictured above, and what is in these photos:

The muffler bypass, or more accurately, muffler eliminator.

*photos courtesy of Fabspeed*

You should be able to do this in 3-4 hours, longer than just the euro pre-muffler because you have to remove the muffler too.

Yes, this will be extremely loud, and probably produce less horsepower than stock.

Here's a question, Running without a muffler and drawing official attention to your lack of a catalytic converter, a good idea?
