Help! I can't get my shifter back in!!

Please kind Pelicans, I need some advice. I removed the shifter in my 87 Carrera to replace the bushings and clean and lube everything. I put the car into 4th as per the Bently manual , and the shifter came out with no drama. Now, wehn I tried to reinstall the lever there is not enough room to get it into the hole in the tunnel so I can insert the shift rod that goes toward the back of the car. Is there some trick for getting the shifter assembly back in? Help!! Please.

Thanks kycarguy. I have the shifter back together just fine, I just cant get the shifter rod back far enough to slip the shifter mechanism in the hole in the floor.

I just did this a year ago when my china-hat bushing crumbled to pieces. I seem to remember having to put the rod in first, by itself. You have to rotate it in the channel to get it to slide all the way back and clear the cutout, then attach the rest of the stuff.
Nice and smoothe when its all back together...
