1998 GT1 back flip at Road Atlanta... is a painting (?)!

I'll always remember this moment as I was there, but it seems like a strange thing to immortalize in a painting.

Here's the video of the real thing:

I agree. Along with the paintings of the Audi and Merc flipping as well. Just not the kind of painting or artwork I would purchase.

That video is just crazy. The car tried to take off just like an airplane.

Cool Flying Porsche nothing new....

These guys are just copycats. Mark Donohue managed to do a backward roll in a 917 over 30 years ago!

Reminds me of the Mercedes the flew like a plane a few years ago at LeMans.

Yep, it looks like it's headed for the stars. Notice the title... "Liftoff."

That cameraman on the Mercedes flip was really on the ball to catch that. You've got to figure they're there for hours usually setting up the same shot over and over... then a car heads for the sky.

If the Porsche had reached the same altitude as the Mercedes and veered right instead of left it would have take out a lot of spectators.

Which is what happened in 1955 at Le mans.

BTW after Mark Webber's incident Mercedes-Benz decided they would never race at LM again...

Is that the same Mark Webber that now drives for Williams F1?

I don't remember seeing that BMW flip (Atlanta?), was it just 'old news' after the Porsche and Merc doing the same?

Excuse my ignorance, but what is it that causes the flip on a normally 'stable' car?
Are these cars badly set up? or badly driven?
Or are they just driven on the edge all the time?

I think a painting of the flip is in poor taste.

If you want to read a technical analysis of why and how these types of flips have occurred there is a decent article on mulsannescorner.com

that Benz at LM killed 80 people! and seriously injured 77 others. I just watched it in super slow mo this past weekend. It kept Benz away from LM for a long long time but not forever as someone else wrote correct?

the vidoe is from 1993. Mark Webber was driving the 1993 CLK-GTR. That crash never killed anybody

The 1955 crash killed several people and kept MB out of racing for a long time

That is the understatement of the day.
77 people were killed
Merc. was out of racing until 1987.
