Help! How to make an early "79 intake work with a '82 bottom using CIS electronics
I am building a 3.2 short-stroke with this:
Top is a complete intake system from a '79; Bottom is from an '82 SC; This will go into my 1980 SC and I'll keep CIS. The early SC's '78-'79 didn't have Lambda, so, what needs to be done to make this set-up work? Can I use my existing harness? What wiring needs to be changed? Thank you. SmileWavy |
I don,t think it will need any changes as long as you are using the fuel distributer and injectors from the 79 , just ignore the control unit under the seat and the O2 sensor isn,t neededanymore.. The newer system has also smaller ports .Have you opened up your heads to match the intake runners?
|
Yes, dont forget to have the machine shop open up your intake ports to 39mm. Sorry, cant help with the electrical stuff.
|
Thanks John: Yes, the heads will be bored out from ~34mm to about 38mm to match the larger intakes. I have the complete early intake incl. air box and FD.
Is the throttle body larger on the early intakes? I'll be getting 98mm P/C's, CR 9.8, with 964 cams, SSI's and with the larger intakes hope to get ~220 -230 HP. So, I just use my '80 harness and tape up non-used connections like the frequency valve plug? The AAV, AAR are still used but do people continue to use the Deceleration Valve with this set-up? What other mods need to be done for this set-up? This '82 engine 930/16 calls for 1.4 - 1.7mm cam timing with SC cams. I believe that the cam timing is still the same when using 964 cams. Correct? Shuie: You think 39mm on the heads? |
I would ask" camgrinder" for a cam timing recomendation for this setup. I would tend to set it like the carrera 3.2 which is 1/2 way between the 2 SC settings
|
John. I will ask Camgrinder about this. I notice that the socket/plug for the fuel injection located next to the left rear shock has 12 pins for the '82 but there are less pins on my '80. Does the 12-pin plug from an '82 fit on the socket of an '80?
|
I think it,s a 14 pin plug on both for the main harness(ie starter, oil pressure, temp, etc. I don,t have anything plugged in to the plug by the shock .The PO removed my O2 sensor years ago..The missing pins are probably for the O2 sensor etc. The pin setup is available on this site Search for 14 pin plug 3.6 conversion under Ingo, s name for one.
|
John, you may no longer have CIS on your 3.6 conversion?
I am not referring to the main 14-pin connector by the rear fuse panel; this one is called: "Engine fuel injection harness connection" and is located besides left rear shock tower, Bentley 971-12. It's on all the stock SC's that I have seen but it can have different pin numbers according to the year. The '82 plug has more pins and I wonder how the '82-plug would fit onto the '80 socket. Anyone? I am keeping CIS and I believe with some minor changes the harness from the '82 can be used with the existing wiring and electrical components. Anyone? |
I don,t have CIS on the 3.6 but I also had the car with a backdated CIS system without O2 sensor on the 3.0 which it replaced. The plug you are talking about wasn,t connected to anything once my car had the lambda systtem removed. I think thats what you will end up with as there are no electrical connections to the CIS basic system which don,t go through the 14 pin plug.
