Smile Mid vs. SC weight? ? ?

I spend way too much time on this bbs everyday and frequently I hear comments on the lightweight of mid years compared to SC's. Where does this difference come from? Is there thicker sheet metal on the SC? Do flares really weigh that much ? What is it, and what is the actual difference? Or is it simply that some middies are not galvanized and have 3 inch rust holes in the body, namely mine?

Rich

Who the heck knows! I've been wondering the same thing for a while now. Fellow Pelican Pkaaso has a '74 that's absolutely stock in every way. During a group fun weigh-in at a local scale his car ended up at 2400 pounds and mine ended up at 2650. Mine's been lightened. His is stock.

I have no AC, RS door panels, no engine sound pad, manual seats, etc. Why the heck does my car still weigh 250 pounds more than Paul's?

C'mon now! Quit being logical.

BTW, at our weigh in, I had the lightest Carrera in the group and most of the other cars were coupes, so the lightening has paid off a bit. Otherwise, I think my car would be in the 2800 pound range.

"I spend way too much time on this bbs"
- you realize you are the only one, right?

We need the particular years to compare, but...
- the safety bumpers added a lot, esp. in the US
- CIS is heavier than carbs, so is DME
- 3 heater blowers, elec. motors for windows, luxo-barge items like that...
- bigger oil pumps in the engine
- I have not seen much data on changes in crankshaft wts. but they got bigger so prob. heavier, depsite some CAE at least for the 993.
- bigger brake rotors & wheels/tires; steel calipers vs. Al S calipers
- appaently there are some 'extra' pieces of sheet metal in the unit body of the later cars, making them stiffer, but also heavier -- is this something Zeke posted on ??
- extra undercoating
- extra galvanizing adds a bit

some things got lighter in the later years (to compensate):
- seats (foam vs. the old horsehair)
- Al F. susp. Xmember
- AL R trailing arms
- valvetrain for 993

The '74 is the lightest of the bumper cars...

Thanks for the responses. I am glad to see that I am not the only one that did not know the answer. I feel like I have heard the line enough times that I just had to ask. It sounds like Mr Webb is saying just a lot of little crap adds up to a difference.

Galvanizing for me is the only reason I'd jump from my '74 to a '78-'83 SC. If galvanized panels are a penalty, they're worth more than their "weight" in gold if they help the body panels from rusting.

yup - but note that some panels on your car _are_ galvanized - it started in the early 1970's and by the SC they were comepletely galvanized

I posted on this some time ago if you want to search it up - went thru several books & old Pano articles to try & correlate what happened when

Dont forget the 3.0 engine case weights 40lbs more than the magnesium case . Also the valve covers are aluminum on the 3.0 .
Sc cars came with front mount coolers too . Not all earlier cars did .
Power brake boosters too .
How much were we talking about .... 250 lbs ? Well we have that covered for sure.

I weigh mine on a reg basis and it for ever is not the same, use certed scales and trk scale 2020 to 2200 full tank .....course I like to brag on the lower #s
an other thing to consider is the the certed scale peo will tell you plus or minus 20 ez cause that's how they weigh.
I think you have to make it a law of avgs.

Whoa! The aluminum crankcase only adds about 22#, about the same is added for the aluminum 915 case vs mag case.

my sc at last i weighed it was 2285lbs with a 1/2 tank of fuel. mind you that that was at the scale at the local dump and was after a serious bout of dieting. imo the galvanizing and undercoating add serious tonage but are worth it in the long run.
