73 glove box lock - will VW parts fit ?

The glove box lock of my '73 911 just failed in the locked position. Managed to remove the lid by pulling the metal hinge wire. After dismantling the lock I found that the small metal nose activating the lock has sheared off. VW Beetle locks look similar, although somewhat shorter. Does anyone know if it is possible to use the VW locks or to use some of their internal components to repair the 911 lock ?

If your 911 lock is indeed longer than the Beetle one, you are out of luck trying to repair yours. The part on the end of the cylinder that retracts the black plastic striker is what appears to have broken off your lock. This is part of the whole lock cylinder, and a shorter Beetle lock cylinder probably wouldn't work in your housing.

What about using a complete Beetle lock? If you can tolerate a shorter knob on the outside of the lid, it should work. The part on the inside of a Beetle lock looks identical to your pic.

What key opens your lock? What's the code? It may be that VW and Porsche use the same blanks and profiles since the lock suppliers are the same. I remember that the key for my old 84 944's glove box was the same as was used in the 60s for Beetle doors and ignitions.

Here's an aftermarket repro Beetle lock:

Thanks,

I guess I'll try a non-locking VW lock. Will save some weight anyway.

I just took out my glove box out of my race car. That thing weighed over 3 pounds. I do not know if I have the key for the lock, but if I do you can have the lock. FYI- it was painted blue along with the car but paint thinner should take it right off.

Thanks a lot for the offer Plavan. I have a used 911 lock from a salvage yard. I just wanted to use new components in order to avoid having another broken lock down the road. These cast metal parts are not getting better with age and a new part should be good for another 32 years.
