CDI Screach ?

Hi, i've been having some trouble for a couple of months. One morning car would not keep running after running perfectly (80 SC), Did the usual tune up stuff and got it running but is missing badly at idle and low revs under load. High revs seems ok. I remember hearing a squeal from the engine bay (CDI) loud enough i could hear it from inside the car when i turn the ignition on. Now i have to put my ear up against it to hear any squeal. Would that suggest the CDI unit is on the way out. Also its a targa and the roof leaked during the winter and about 1 inch of water lay on the p/s floor for about 1 week. I don't think any water got in the box under the seat. Thanks in advance for any pointers.

80 SC

Can anyone tell me how loud the CDI should be with ignition on, should you be able to hear it from the cabin?

I would doubt it. You'd have to open the engine lid and listen. Also do not confuse the whine of the fuel pump with the CDI box whistle. In terms of absolute loudness there is quite a spread between boxes so this is not a good or reliable indicator for the box working.

I have seen boxes that latch up and can only be "reset" by shutting off the car. They ususally overheat when this happens.

On another note the box under the passenger seat is NOT the CDI box but the control unit for the frequency valve. If there was water on the cabin floor you have a good chance that there was damage to this box resulting in poor mixture. This could be the cause for poor running.

Good luck,
Ingo
