I take it you've tried adjusting the linkages and bushings. I can't answer the questions on tools however start with looking at the linkages if you haven't already. They are easy to get to and diagnose quickly.

replaced coupler bushings, shaft bushing and shifter cup with no help.adjusted clutch,no help. What else?

It just seems interesting that it's the bottom gears (as seen via the shifter). That just logically points to the shifter linkage needing to be adjusted. But, if you have already done that, it's time for the real experts to chime in.

As you may have already found out this BBS is most likely the most valuable tool you'll need during your rebuild.

If you haven't discovered that, then I suggest you take some time and read this thread.

good luck!!! ;)

be sure the shift handle does not contact the shift tower before the gear can be fully engaged. the shift guide fork that is attached to a 4 bolt cover on the bottom of the trans often gets loose and messes up the accuracy of the shifting. drain the gear oil and remove the plate before you tear into the trans. the fact that all the missing gears are when you pull the handle rearward, tells you something like this is going on.

I'm thinking along the lines that you are,it feels like linkage but it does'nt.Except for 1st,all others were ok with no grinding, twisting ,etc. Will ck the fork as you suggest. How would the handle hit the tower ?would that be the fore and aft adjustment at the coupler?
